with highway travel I actually noticed a small decrease in fuel economy when I ran a tank of 'plus', been using 89 since

I am not sure but I think after some time you will clog your fuel system by using the best fuel. It's not really a clog just use one of those cleaning systems to get rid of the problem. But that it is really in a long time. And a side effect is that you gas mileage is a little worst.

The simple answer, yes. Your car is programed to run on 87 octane. Your car will not run any better on higer octane, but it could run worse. This is because your stock ECU is set to run 87. Not 91, not 93, not jet fuel... 87.

That said: You can change this however buy buying a piggy back ECU either from Greddy or RRM, or even flashing the original ECU. These systems change the characteristics of the fuel map to allow for higher octane use and will pump out better HP and torque accordingly. RRM claims 10-15% gains... depending on mods. This then allows the engine to run better and more efficently on higher octane.

PS- that was fun... but if someone didn't say it, SEARCH!

Actually, running a tank of a good detergent fuel, like Shell V-Power once or twice a year isn't a bad idea, but for everyday use, Mitsu says 87, so use 87. Besides, now that gas is like 27.50 a gallon, why spend more if you don't have to.

Off topic, hey Amby: The Fruit F@#$er avatar is awesome.

Why buy shell V power when you can buy fuel injector cleaner and it's cheaper in the long run. You only need to use about half the bottle and it's not octane booster it's just additives to clean the fuel system. V power is 93 octane and will actually make the car run worse.

I dunno what octane booster you're buying, but around Chicago, it's all 5 to 9 bucks a bottle, plus you have to go actually buy it. Might as well spend the extra 12 cents a gallon and fill up with it, it'll still be cheaper than buying a bottle, especially if you only plan to use half of it.

The mitsu tech at my dealership told me it wasn't a bad idea, but not to run on it year round. Since he's worked on every car I've ever owned (and most of my friends) I trust him enough to give it a whirl.

Now if you have some clinical evidence to shoot me down in flames, go for it, I'm interested, but otherwise you're correct...using more that 87 (regular) all the time is baaaad for the car.

Be better to get him on one window, and a mutilated fruit on the adjacent one.

Amby, I like the way you think. Maybe get the rear window done with FF Prime, remember with all the little ones flying everywhere. LOL!

Hahaha, have them swarming all over the car, maybe make it look like one is getting it on with your exhaust.

I'm not talking about octane booster. I'm talking about fuel injector cleaner. It is an additive to your gas that cleans out the injectors, supposidly like V-power is suppose to. Um... like Gumout. Or STP gas treatment. These do not increase the octane levels. Do it every 3,000 miles or so and a bottle costs about 2.50 in most places.

And you can get octane booster for about 2.50 also if you look hard enough. Not that you need it.

I apologize, I misread the previous post. Since I did not mention octane boost in any form prior to your last post, I jumped the gun and didn't pay attention. I thought you stated the same effect could be achieved with octane booster, which is my mistake.

But yes, Gumout is exactly what would have the same effect.

Seeing as how raising the octane in the fuel from time to time will have no negative effect on the car, it's really up to the user to decide if they want to add detergent with a bottle or from the pump, but I am with you in emphasizing, do NOT fill up with fuel other than 87 regular if you can avoid it.
