Spark Plug Help!!

hey everyone!

ok so here's my problem. I was changing my spark plugs with a friend of mine and we had the stock NGK's and i had bought the upgraded irridium NGK's right? well like a dummy i didn't check to make sure they would fit. i took the computers work for it at the auto place. Well they were too big. SO before that my friend decided to jump ahead and put a non sparkplug socket to get the first spark plug. that dropped down into the hole and it took forever to fish it out. In doing so i slightly cracked the firstl sparkplug SO i had this wild goose chase to find new ones that matched and there was a no show the ones i got from NGK were off by one number and it still gave me ****.

SO WE PUT THE OLD ONES BACK IN. and the car runs only when i come to stop light it idles at like 500 rpms and want's to shut off. I know the gaps should be .039mm to .043 or 1.1 to 1.0 right? well the stock ones were a bit higher then that like 1.4 or so. I might just run to the dealer and get the same ones cuz every other spark plug i get that "works with the lancer" either Champion or what have you" craps out on me!! it won't start.

MY QUESTION!!! (sorry)

is there anything i can do to make sure the car doesn't shut off on me when i'm at a stop light?! until i can work on it which is sunday i'm driving with the old plugs which are good enough to make it run but iffy on the idle any suggestions?! THANKS EVERYONE!!!

Well, I know im not the most intelligent person, but. . .

i would think that the ****ty idle after cracking your spark plug is due to a misfire, which is why it would want to die, because you have 3 other cylinders trying to pull the weight. limping around on it is not advisable as everytime your cylinder misfires you are building up carbon and junk in there and making genreally ****ty emissions that arent good for your car or the environment. also, it could lead to more problems down the road if you do it for too long.

thats my opinion on the matter. call the dealership and get some stock ones shipped to you or just bum a ride from a buddy and get some ASAP and this time dont let your buddy touch it, always use a padded plug socket and a torque wrench with a ball retents. gap the plugs to the specs mentioned in the manual.

I had the same problem when I bought my iridiums. I got them from Pep Boys. I have an '03 OZ. The computer said 02-04 Lancers. The nut was too big. I took them back and they looked it up again. They have them listed as 02-04 and 02-03. The 02-03 worked great. Exact same size as stock.

I just had the same exact problem. What I found out when I took the plugs back to pep boys is that in the description for the plugs on the computer it said it was for the evolution. It's a 13/16 plug and we need a 5/8 plug cause u cant get a 13/16 size socket down in the plug hole to tighten down the plugs and those plugs were like $30 for 4! Your best bet is to go back to the dealership to get the stock NGK plugs and they are only like $2.00 a piece. Don't get plugs from autozone or anything cause autolite and champions and most others will actually cause you to loose performance. Or at least it did with my engine.
