Hey, long time no post on here... Well, sorry to see it's not any better. Your actually "tapping" into the core lines wouldn't have something to do with it would it? If not the water pump, not the thermostat, not any leaks, then it just might not like the setup.

Does the Lancer have a coolant sensor or something in the block that you can "Tee" into?

well actually I removed the coolant lines, because thats what I thought it was in the first place.
I've had the turbo setup on the car almost as long as I've had the car. Never had any problems until after I rebuilt the engine. I seriously doubt that the new internals would be affecting the engine this way.
I'll change the thermostat again this weekend. It only takes a few minutes anyway, can't hurt. Hopefully that gives me results. If that doesn't work, I'll go for the water pump.

hmm.... 50K seems a little premature for a water pump. But If there aren't any blockages and the thermostat is fine then I can't think of anything else it might be, but then I'm not an expert at cooling systems. This does sould a lot like the other dead/dying water pumps I've dealt with though.

Ok, I just changed out the thermostat. The one I removed was extremely different than the one I installed. Maybe that had something to do with it, I don't know
Anyway, I took it for three laps around the block at a moderate speed. So far no overheat and none of the previous symptoms;

-Overheating (duh)
-RPM surging
-No heat at idle

I'll keep my fingers crossed. It would be a huge burden off my shoulders if this was the end of all this overheating nonsense.

Thermostats are such a pile of crap. Sometimes you can go through 2-3 of them before you get one that works right and/or doesn't stick.

Well, I'm thinking I was given the wrong type of thermostat. The one I took out was real beefy looking compared to the new one I just installed.
Its so nice to not have to drive everywhere with the heater on full blast.

Okay well, problem wasn't solved. Eventually it got worse. So I saved my tax return and decided to take it to the dealership and have it worked. The guy thinks its either the head gasket is blown or there might be a crack in the head. Really sucks cause its going to cost me an arm and a leg.
The total cost will cover that tapping I've been hearing since the rebuild. It turns out a rocker assy is loose and a lifter is bad. So thats good, I hope the heads not cracked cause thats just going to add a machine shop fee to the price.
Well, at least I'm getting it taken care of before it totally melted down or something.

You do know that prolonged overheating will slowly warp the cylinder head . . . had this happen on a Dodge Caravan and my S13 (constantly overheating when the car stands still).

50K is still too early for a bad water pump. Besides, if it's real bad, it'll leak all over the place.

Possible problem:
1) bad coolant or air within the hose
2) bad thermostat
3) bad radiator somehow or if you have FI, the radiator can't cool enough.

Okay, the dealership tore the engine apart and found the head gasket was allowing pressure to leak into the coolant passages. This was pressurizing the system and causing the overheating.

HG don't go bad at 50K w/o the overheating problems starting first.

Also, the head is okay, the cylinder bore is fine. Unfortunately, the mechanic told me that he found that the pistons were slapping. the tapping sound that I have been hearing is the #3 piston. He said its either the skirt, or the piston isn't the right bore size. Which if its the latter, I might get a little heated. So the mech is taking the pistons out and seeing whats up with them. . I'll find out tomorrow.
I'm going to go ahead and have ARP studs installed since its all apart. Also, the crappy intercooler boots are going to have to be replaced, because they pretty much dry rotted.
Its going to be a lot of money, its going to hurt, but in the end it'll be worth it. It'll will also be nice to have the engine put together professionally. I'll be able to actually run it without worrying.
