That is a dealer recall (I forget what #). But if you go to the dealership they'll have to fix it for free... Search on here to find others like yourself in the same situation or that recall #.

in the mean time, you can look under the dash(driver side) and locate the white thingy that moves the heat/cold flap. Figure if you need to pull or push and set your temperature like that.

My knob snapped too. i went to the dealer, they told me there is a recall on hte ECU and the fan controller. However, they said there was no recall on the AC knob. if anyone could give me some clarification on this, it would be helpful. I know this is an old topic, but i could use some help. TY

It's not a recall it's a TSB.

i am a bit confused what a technical service bulletin is, i see several sites that ask for money to see what they are for my car. what exactly does this mean for my ac knob is hte question i guess i am getting at. is it just an informative paper on a specific issue somewhat like an advisory notice?

It means that the company knows it's an issue but they haven't issued a recall. If your car is still in warranty, they'll cover it otherwise you're SOL.

ah, thank you very much. Now better armed with knowledge, i will speak with the technicians at the dealership tomorrow. No idea how long my warrenty is, better figure that out. It does seem odd though that they recognize there is a problem, but dont actually do a recall on it...

I'll post on here how it goes tomorrow, if anyone cares, =)

WOW....G friggin G mitsubishi. To get my temp knob to work again they said they had to pull the dash, take apart the heater and replace a door in there. Grand total 1100 dollars. not a chance that is happenning. I'll carry a blanket in my car before i pay 10% of the cost of the car to fix a knob. Gonna try sending a few letters to mitsubishi and see if they'll do anything about it but the warrenty is 3 years, had the car since 03....thank you all for the help and what not. got the 2 recalls done, but not touchin the knob unless its free, lol.

Got told the same thing. I've been trying for months to get the part on here since I rather not spend 1300$ for a part.

Anyone else think this is bs about Mitsubishi not fixing this for free even out of warrenty? They recongnize this is a problem, but they won't fix it with no cost to the customer? Not gooooood....

I think they won't fix it cuz it's too expensive of a fix and would rather not lose the time & $$ it takes to fix it. I know mine is stiff to switch over sometimes, but haven't managed to break it yet.

So I've spoken with dealers and others with the problem, and the final result (with my car) is that the door in the heater core has a gear on the side that broke. I have been told that i need to drain the coolant, take the dash off, open up the heater core and replace the part. Has anyone done this, or have any tips on doing it? I am going to try and do this myself, and any hints would obviously be appreciated. I think the dealer said it's like 800 dolllars in labor and like 15 bucks in parts or whatever. Still, from what I know some knobs snap and others do what mine did. If your knob snaps and then feels spongy like mine it's where the cord that comes off the knob connects inside the heater core.

I will post pics if I get around to doing this, I have a feeling it will be 3 weeks minimum. Anyone else have pics already though?

Oh, about the recall. I learned that they definitely don't do recalls unless it's safety related or can cause more damage to the car (like our ECU reflash recall)
