Once again, Lancer + Stupid extreme cold = no fun
Once again, Lancer + Stupid extreme cold = no fun
Ok, so today evironment Canada says this:
"Temperature -38°C Pressure/ Tendency 102.6 kPa↑ Visibility 24 km Humidity 61 % Wind Chill -49 Dewpoint -43°C Wind NW 11 km/h " (coldest in Canada...North America actually....yay!)
Needless to say, cold. In Fahrenheit, bloody cold! I unlocked my car from the passenger side to let in a passenger, and then she couldn't close the door, it wouldn't latch. So, she held it shut and locked it, and it stayed shut. When we arrived home, she couldn't open the door
(go figure, hey?) I'm thinking it's just too bloody cold for the thing to work, lock, latch whatever. My question is: What if, when (or if) it ever warms up to habitible temperatures the thing still won't open? What do you think is wrong? I'm thinking it's so cold that the lock mechanism is binding or whatever lubricant is used on it is just cold and mucky too. Haven't tried the key in it yet. I'm guessing that'll do it.
Also, another note of curiosity; when it's cold (cold here = -35C or so, I mention this because this is relative to location of respondants) the engine makes this eerie hum, like a 50's era UFO sound effect on idle (cold idle ie: ~ 2000rpm) Why? Is it bad? It goes away when it warms up.
P.S. Why can't I use the recirculate button when using defrost? Wouldn't it be better to recirculate the warm cabin air to defrost than to pull in the -50C air from outside?

The door latch will probably work fine when it warms up. I'd guess it's just the grease is too cold.
Engine belts (especially toothed timing belts) make odd noises when they're that cold. That's the UFO-like humming.
Defrost uses outside air because it's likely to have less humidity than air that's recirculating in your car. If you want to recirc for faster cabin warm-up, you have to switch it to *just* to the left of the floor/defrost setting.
