Idle Problem

Sup everyone, i guess you could call me a newbie at this, bought my lancer 2 years ago now, and just recently my idle has been quite screwy causing my car to die at times. I start my car up now and it will warm up around 1500 rpm, then out of no where it drops to about 500 rpm, then back up, and when its warmed up idling about 750 rpm, it will drop to almost 400 rpm, then shoot up to about 900-1000 rpm, then back to 700-750 rpm. i was told it could be either my fuel filter or my short ram air intake, and i just noticed a 1 inch crack in the cupling on my intake system, could this be a problem? havent had the money lately to try trial and error, could use some helpful hints and tips, thanks.
