Cold Air Intake....what did I do???
Cold Air Intake....what did I do???
So, my boyfriend decided that the Road/Race Intake was too expensive for what they offered, and was sure he could fabricate the same thing for much less. He purchased a standard round air filter from an auto store, and piping to connect everything. After about 3 hours of trying to make the damn thing fit (because of course it is not made for a Lancer), I started my car and it died! The poor thing idles for about 5 seconds and then just dies. The error light is on the entire time. It seemed as thought it may be getting too much air. So we closed the hood and tried it again....to no avail. I took some pictures with the hopes of some input! Please be nice...
Thanks everyone.

Never EVER let your boyfriend touch your car again.
Your MAS air flow sensor is not connected right. Thats the sensor that tells your car how much air is comming into the motor and how to adjust the amount of fuel being injected into the cylinder, based on how much air is comming in.
Dont start it up again until the stock intake is back on, and you break up with that guy. (lol)

But yeah; I would let the pros do the work. It's not worth it to mess up your car just to save a few bucks.
#1- your car is not damaged, and won't be unless you continuously try to drive it.
#2- that sounds like a Mass Air Sensor problem to me, it simply isn't connected right. If you or your boyfriend can't get it to work within the next couple tries, put the original filter box on it. if it still doesn't wanna run right, or it jumps around and revs weird, call roadside assistance and lie to your dealer... lol
#3 don't break up with your boyfriend. I did the exact same thing to my caliber the first time. it is a simple mistake, really. i'm sure RRM did it a couple times when they were trying to come up with their setup.
mainly, though, i wouldn't try to just make my own air intake for this car because it is so complex and connected. let other people do the trial and error crap.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking it was a problem w/ the MAF sensor also! The car is back to stock, and I will be purchasing the "correct" intake system from Road/Race right after I finish this post! =)
Yeah thats a good idea. Road race is top notch. Plus, he could have it not supported correctly which could cause friction on some wires or something else to rub the wrong way.
Don't give him a hard time though, at least he's spending the time and trying.

unless you can build a proper MAF sensor mount ... buy it
also the same reason with the hard pipes to get rid of the flexy pipe after the MAF.. the tube(s) that came out of the pipe the general populous can't fabricate it properly
truth be known... the time involved would be counter productive for me, given the cost of the RRM intake, it may sound a little egotistically .. but my time is worth more then the cost of the intake kit

yeah, if you don't have absolute expertise and the ability to make your own materials, then you should just buy one pre-made.
it's like riding a bike i guess. it's the easiest thing in the world once you know how to do it, but the first time? you're gonna fall on your face.

hey I think the best ideas come about with fooling around and improvizing
with a beer in hand you can conqure the world
I think they custom short ram would have worried, just gotta get fuse that sensor in right.
Your only risk when it comes to leaks is from dirt getting in there. That and your MAF telling your ECU, TOO RICH TOO RICH . ... no no TOO LEAN TOO LEAN. lol
