Passenger Seat Belt Indicator Flashing

Here's an interesting problem. I got my lancer GTS (fully loaded) back in may of 07. Everything is running great on it. Sometime in november or so, the passenger seat belt indicator light started to flash 5 times then stay solid and it would repeat this pattern (with no passenger in the car). At this point I already had about 12k miles on it and no other issues have really come up. So after about a month and a half of watching this stupid light go on and off at night, i finally take it to the dealer to look at it.

The service guys hooked up their computers, and even took it out for a ride with one guy driving and the other in the back seat with the computer plugged in. When they got back they said that nothing is wrong with the system and everything checks out. They even checked the harness under the seat to see if it was loose or anything. Then they tell me that its a safety issue so that if there were to be any body in the seat, it would serve as a reminder to buckle up and there is no way to disable the light. Meanwhile, im damn sure that this light was never before flashing when there wasnt a passenger in the seat.

The simple fix was to just buckle up the passenger seat belt and then only the airbag deactivation light is on which isnt so annoying.

The other night, i went out with my brother, then had to go out to pick up my other brother. Of course my brother forgot to rebuckle the seat belt, and I'm used to it being buckled that i didnt notice it wasn't buckled. Amazinglly the light has stopped flashing when the seat belt isnt buckled and no passenger is there.

Not sure what the problem was or if it was some error code. I'll be bringing my car to the dealer tomorrow to ask the question to them again. Has anybody else experienced this with their GTS?

Mine does the same thing, the light will randomly blink when no one is in the passenger seat. It did this when I first bought the car, then stopped for a long while, but now I noticed it doing it again...so I'm confused, because I thought that was only suppose to blink when someone is in the seat without their seatbelt on. I'll have to check next time someone is in the car in the front seat what it does when they're sitting there with/without their seatbelt on and then I'll repost.

if it's doing it at 10lbs then that is a safety issue and needs to be addressed. The airbag is supposed to be disabled if there is less than 60lbs in the seat. Unless I'm mistaken, the passenger seatbelt warning shouldn't be going off unless the airbag is enabled...

mine did the same thing, now it doesnt . what i did was just move the passenger seat foward a little. and it stoped blinking. i dont know why i thought of that or why it worked it just did. so if your seat is all the way back try moving it up a little. i hope that helps

Ok, so I talked to the dealer today and this is what they told me. Due the the changing environment in the car...aka cold soak from being the winter, and then rapid heat from interior heater...the sensor has a possibility to malfunction. If it happens repeatedly, bring it back.

I think my solution of buckling the seat belt if it starts flashing is good enough for me :-D

Next solution...replace existing seats with the Recaro seats from the evo. So much more comfortable than the ones we have. The parts guy there is looking into if its a direct bolt on and if the harness is the same. Can't wait to get those in my car

Thank you. I was seriously getting concerned about why a 20-lb dog was making the light blink...
