Where to buy "junk" cars?

I currently have a 2002 mitsubishi lancer but my 5-speed trans needs some work. I would like to do all the work myself but I cannot go without my car for long periods of time. I have decided the best route for me would be to try and find a totaled lancer with a manual trans.

My problem is I need to find a "good" junk car (lol pun). I do not know where to get one from. Is copart any good? I have been thinking about making an account and trying to buy one through their auction site. Any other sites out there?

Also I live in Florida so if there are any shops or yards that sell junk cars please keep me informed!

Thanks!

Seriously, you don't need a good junk car. A good junk car, is a used car.
All you need is a transmission, a service manual, at least half a brain, a few tools and a weekend of your time.

A buddy and I swapped trans in my Lancer over the course of a weekend. It was both our first time undertaking that kind of mechanical work and trust me... it's not as "complicated" as it sounds or looks. I honestly can't remember why it took us a weekend to get it done because quite frankly it should have taken us a few hours at most. I think we were just afraid of messing up and we prolly ended up reading the service manual 20 times over, making the job last that much longer.

If you plan on it taking more than a weekend, then perhaps you should consider having someone else do the job.

www.car-parts.com to source a trans.

edit:
I just read one of your ealier post again.
So you got some kind of grind going on and you'd like to change the gears and ****.
To do that, you'd like to get a junk car that's got a good trans in it?
Why do you want to do that?
You either have to buy a used trans you'll find at a wrecker and put that in your car to replace your current trans, or you take your current trans appart, find the faulty components and fix them.
You can't do both. I mean... you could do both, but why would you spend money on buying a transmission that'd you put in your car while you spend more money to fix another transmission that you'd later put back in your car? I don't get it.

Get a trans, put that it in your car, trash your current trans, or sell it to a wrecker and call it a day!

I completely understand what you are saying. I know it is kind of pointless to try and rebuild my trans if i replace it with another one. I am just learning how to fix cars and I would like to give it a go atleast. I want to be able to work on an engine and transmission without having my car down.

I mean, I might as well try to fix the broken trans since it is out of the car anyways, right? I want to replace it with a used one buy rebuild mine like "new" is what I guess I am trying to get at. lol. I couldn't find a trans for less than 500-600 on that site. I guess I will wait a while and see if anything better comes along.

How much could I get if I junked the trans with the grind?

I have no idea what you'd get for your current trans.

On car-parts.com it can help if you look outside of your immediate living area and expect to pay for shipping. If a trans in your area sells for 600 + 100 shipping, you may find something outside your area that costs 400 + 125 shipping.

Anyway... do whatever. Just don't wait too long or you'll end up having to do it all in a rush and you'll f@wk yourself over by not having the luxury of time on your side.
