Severe Rattle From Back of Car (Sounds Like Rear Windshield)
I have a 2003 Mitsu Lancer OZ Rally, and I need some help!! Whenever I hit a small bump in the road I hear a LOUD rattle/noise from the back of the car. It definitely sounds like it is coming from inside the car, possibly from the rear windshield. I checked everything I could think of back there; the fold down seats, the speakers in the rear deck, the spoiler... and I can't seem to find what is rattling. It almost sounds like the rear windshield is mounted incorrectly, and it's going to fall out!! The car only has 9800 miles on it, and this noise is driving me nuts!! If anyone else has had this problem, or has any ideas as to what it is PLEASE let me know!! Thanks...
Ok, I have the SAME stupid noise on my 03 OZ...and it bugs the hell outta me. I ALSO had the same freakin noise on my old car!! I can't seem to escape it! I'm taking it to the dealership because now I don't feel so paranoid
u hear it all the time when u hit a bump? seeing you guys drive oz rally's, the only thing i could tell you is that your stock perches are broken. i have the same noise, but its caused by the hangers of my catback. so crawl under the back of your car and take a look at the perches of the stock rear sway bar. if any one of them is snapped, just take it to the dealer for a crappy plastic replacement, or you could call the guys at RRM and order their steel perches for about 70 bucks i think..
The other alternative, is that you have a rear ledge rattle. This same rattle is the bane of all Lancers with systems in them.
The ENTIRE rear ledge moves up and down. As it drops, it rattles against the crossmember in underneath.
Take some heavy boot insoles, like from Wal-mart, cut them up and place them under the rear deck (from inside the trunk) between the ledge and the crossmember. You'll probably notice a considerable reduction in noise.
Of course, majestic could be right, and the perches might be shot. They're easy to spot, so no harm in crawling down and having a look. If they are broken, RRM is the way to go.

Mine sounds like the rear deck lid or the rear windsheild. I should also mention that my front windshield does the same thing!, as well as various parts of my dash. I DO NOT have any stereo upgrades, and I even drive really slow over railroad crossings/avoid potholes etc.. I'm going to try to get the dealership to re-tighten/fasten the dash and have alook at the windows.
Yeah, mine definitely sounds like the rear windshield. I just think it's pretty ****ty that something like that is happening with less than 10,000 miles on the car! Oh well, I guess I will schedule an appointment with the dealer and have it checked out. It's good to hear that someone else is having the same problem though.
