2002 lancer running rough

Hi, I just bought a 2002 lancer and it has a few issues. The car has 177000km on it and I dont know about any service history. The car starts fine and the belt squeals sometimes on start up or randomly driving which is annoying but still not the biggest problem.
The big thing is how rough the car runs. It idles a little high like 1500 in neutral but when you put it in drive or reverse the idle goes down to about 900 but the whole car shakes. Once you get driving it runs fine i think but at a stop car shakes. Im not sure what the problem might be and im hoping its something really easy and minor....ha...ha..........

Any info on squealing and rough running would be great.
thanks

Squealing is likely a loose belt.

Rough and high idle could be a few things. Are there and check engine lights?

I had someone look at it and he did a spark check and compression test and he said those were good but he said my alternator is overcharging. 17 volts he said. He thinks that could be what's causing it to run rough. Could that actually be the problem?

Also when you go to the back of the car and listen to the exhaust it goes put put put put instead of a steady flow.

The squealing noise is from your belts. Check the tension on them using this trick: find the longest belt section and turn the belt 90 degrees. If the belt goes to 90 and feels like it won't go any more, your tension is fine; otherwise you need to raise the tension. The tensioner bolt for your alternator is on the bracket holding it up. Loosen the bolt holding the alternator to the bracket (12mm), then climb under the car and loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt (14mm). After that, you can adjust the tension with the bolt facing the firewall (12mm). The tensioner for the serpentine belt is in the front of the engine bay, uncomfortably close to the left radiator fan. This one is also 12mm.

The high idle might be a vacuum leak. People have also reported a high idle after installing an aftermarket air intake. The latter can be solved by an ECU reset.

The rough ride is most likely a motor mount on a car with that many miles. For me, torn CV joint boots also caused a rough ride at speed.

I have the same issues. The squealing is the belts... alternator and accessory... for about 40$ it is worth changing both for peace of mind.

For me, changing the plugs made a big difference to evening out the idle and overall running of the car.. try that the plugs might be the originals worth changing just to be safe.

can I ask how much the coil was? How did you diagnose that it was bad?

Glad to hear it all worked out

The coil was 38 dollars on rockauto.
I knew it was the coil as I could see physical damage also my plugs were fouled and weren't gapped properly.
