Most reliable beater (commuter car)

Looking to drop like $5k on a commuter car so I don't have to drive the ol evo 80 miles a day. What would you reccomend for an ol beater for this price range?

Yup, Civic or an Accord. You can't go wrong with a beater Subaru either. I've known many to go over 150K miles.

From previous experience I can tell you that the Mazda Miata is unbeatable for reliability and fun factor. I got one with 135K miles for $4K and it's really neat. It's my 3rd Miata and totally stock. It gets nearly 30 mpg in daily commute and it's hella fun to drive, specially with the top down and here in the South that's a possibility most of the year
Oh yeah, when it's time for resale you get most of your money back

here's my commuter/beater - 91 nissan nx1600, not my first choice but i got it for free so i can't complain. i definately recommend a civic or accord as a daily driver. you'll get good gas mileage and easy to mod if the tuner bug bites you.

You might be in luck, some of the tall guys have found a way to lower the seats . There are some articles in the Miata.net
Of course, at 6'-5" you are probably a tight fit in most cars with sunroofs or most small compacts......

These are your 4 best choices, bar none. The Camry is probably the best (by a tiny margin) of them in terms of appliance-like reliability.
