Thinking about buying a viper
OK here is the question… If you had 50k to spend on a car and your options were the following, what would you buy?
1) used 2000 – 2002 viper with < 10K miles, immediate delivery
2) 2005 Corvette Z06 – new – 26 miles, immediate delivery
3) Lotus Elise – New – 3 - 6 month wait list just for a build date, not-so-immediate delivery
This car would not be a daily driver (I’ve got the Evo for that) and insurance is not an issue. Give me some opinions.
… I’m obviously leaning towards the Viper.

if I didn't care about the wait I'd get the new Z06 no question. More immediately, I'd get the Elise on order........I'd also consider a new Boxster S around that price.....as far as drop tops go it's a little easier to live with every day than an Elise I would think.

1. elise - its different, you can get it in some wild color, its quick and nimble and has had stellar reviews. plus the wait will only make you enjoy it more.
2. my second choice would be the corvette, and i'm a huge viper fan. its just that the new corvette... well its awesome. i'm just a bigger fan of the elise (i dig the look, the layout, and the silly power to weight ratio).
3. and lastly the viper. its a track monster, but a used viper, even only 10K miles, you can be SURE that its been RAGGED.
elise =

Elise all the way, you dont see many vipers on the road but you sure as hell dont see any elise's running around. I have already seen a handful of the new corvetes. Though all the cars are very nice indeed, i would go with the elise

you need a poll, I say the viper. Someday I will own one. The viper set the bar for putting you back in your seat. You have an evo for the twisty's (so you don't need the elise) and the viper is far more rare than the vette. I think a viper is a car that you could keep for ever and still love it the same every day.

vipers on average need new clutches and sometimes tranny/rear ends every 10-15 thousand miles because of all the tourqe. when the 2006 Z06 comes out it will have 500 horsepower and will be the vipers competitor. all 3 cars will handle awesome but i would go with the new z06 it will be worth the wait.

vipers are track monsters, purpose built, i would love to have one for the track but would never have one on the street. if your keeping your evo as the street car the viper will have a perminant smile on your face when you go to the track, the thing is a BEAST, i loved every second in it.

OK, over the weekend I drove the current generation (C5) Z06 and a 2000 viper (gts) back to back. Both cars had under 10K miles on them. The viper pulls in 4th like the Z06 pulls in second. The difference in torque is unreal. The viper feels ungodly fast (almost out of control). It’s hard to compare the driving experience of these two vehicles... Driving the vette is calm/uneventful (almost mundane), dirving the viper is a raw experience. I may wait for the C6 Z06... but right now... I'll pick up a used viper if the price is right.
Bottom line, the viper blew my mind.
