beater?

What is a decent beater that can be had for cheap? Are there any cars like an old civic hatch that with a little work and weight reduction would be terribly slow. of course not like evo fast but fast enough where it would be livable when my evo's in the shop or I don't feel like using my bumper as a snow plow. But again cheap, any cars and approxamite prices and simple cheap upgrade reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

They are pretty torquey, with its KA24E.

Fast? Faster than Civics and Accords, I'd say.

you cant beat the price, reliability, mileage, and part availability of a civic. you could find a early 90's hatch with decent miles for under $1500. they will go forever, cheap to insure, and easy to replace/fix. granted honda seems to be a four letter word on this board, but they do what they are meant to very well.
