Loose shifter while in gear

Loose shifter while in gear
hey guys,
wondering if anyone can help me out with this. I got a 96 outback as a winter car and I love this thing, its amazing in the snow.
The problem is that even when the car is in gear (5 speed) the shifter can still move around a lot....and i mean alot.
I dont know anything about transmissions or the likes of. Anyone have any suggestions on possible problems that would cause this or things I could do to fix this so that the shifter is once again stiff and without play.
Also, I'm assuming that its not good that its so loose, so if anyone can mention some problems that might arise from such a thing I'd appreciate it too.
