MIVEC Help

Hey Guys.. I currently live away from the U.S. and just purchased a car direct from Japan because they drive with the wheel on the right here (Former British colony). Anyway, I bought a 1996 Mitsubish Lancer MR with the 1.6L MIVEC engine. When I accelerate it and the RPM's go into the 4k+ range I get what sounds like spark knock and I lose power. Since all the engine's HP is generated at the upper end this isn't good. Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting spark knock and/or timing problems? Or whatever else it might be?

Thanks for your help!

Moved to other cars since we don't have a Mirage forum. You may want to try the Mirage forums over at boostaholic though. They could probably help you better than anyone here.

Former British colony? That's Hong Kong, right? I was born and raised there.

Anyhow, most of us in the US won't be able to help you out since the MIVEC engines were never available here. You will have better chance getting help from our members in Australia or New Zealand.

Good Luck

G'day buddy,
I'm in New Zealand and I own a 1996 mitsi Lancer (mivec) and I found this to be a problem too, but then I had an oil change at my mechanics and it came right - He reckoned I had oil that was too thick for the type of engine (the mivec) - Also, if you happen to be driving around ON mivec a lot, you'll find that your oil needs regular topping up.

Also, it does this when its cold.

I hope this helps
