BEREA, Ohio — Mallett Cars says it will offer a limited-production run of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky with V8 engines.
The company, an Ohio conversion firm that specializes in high-performance versions of the Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac CTS-V, is customizing the roadsters with the LS2 V8, the most powerful standard small-block engine ever offered in the Corvette. The 6.0-liter V8 makes 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.
Mallett has not yet announced pricing or availability on the customized Skys and Solstices.
The production version of the $20,000 Solstice is powered by a 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Ecotec engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
The Sky, Saturn's first convertible, will be powered by a 170-hp Ecotec engine with variable valve timing and a five-speed manual transmission. General Motors says the Sky will be priced under $25,000 and be available in early 2006.
Mallett was founded in 1997 by racing veterans Chuck and Lance Mallett. The company is home to the supercharged CTS-V that recently won the sedan class in Car & Driver magazine's supercar shootout.
What this means to you: If you like small cars with way too much power, Mallet will soon have two cars for you to choose from.

That's just insane. It's like dropping a small block into a Miata!!!
While the Mallett Sky and Solstice will be fast in a straight line, the 6.0L LS2 is going to weigh a lot more than the 2.4L Ecotec. Needless to say, handling will be compromised unless the suspension on the Mallett cars is totally revised!

the Ecotec 2.4-liter's 170 horsepower at 6000 rpm also is one of the highest specific-power outputs for any non-boosted four-cylinder of any size sold in the U.S.

An LS1 crate motor is about 425lbs, that doesn't include the transmission. I found a turbocharged Ecotec crate kit that weighs around 260lbs. I bet the LS2's tranmission weighs twice what an Ecotec's trans weighs. I understand that the LS2 is lighter but it isn't even 10lbs lighter if I remember right.

I have owned a Monster Miata (5.0V8 Miata) Sure there are traction issues, but the car was a BLAST to drive...I would still own that car if the tractor trailer hadn't squished it dead. I think this new LS2 Solstice will be an awesome machine.
This is Awesome
My brother has a C5 convertible with the new LS2 block & a stroker kit from Mallett. I can vouch for them. I've been to their shop twice and spent a lot of time talking with Chuck & his dad, great guys and a great company....
Mallett is a top notch & specializes in all aspects of the car. My bro's car is pushing over 475whp on 93 oct and is very streetable. It rides better than stock. Chevy likes working with Mallett so much that your warranty does not void with their power packages..... But they are pricey....
I would think they would offer a total package including updated handling, but it's going to be expensivie.

That solstice will be pretty cool.. I saw it first appear as a concept car at Detroit's NAIAS (north american international auto show) back in 2003.. good to see it made it into production. Thats crazy they stuffed that motor in there.. I think thats a little too much for it lol. GM probably has the best domestic cars/trucks. From what I see they last longer and don't rust out as quick, and are built the most solid of any domestic car.. but ALL of their "economy cars" feel like crap. I tried out the new Chevy Cobalt and it feels like you are riding on a seat made of cardboard. Plus that ecotech engine feels like it has empty horsepower. It takes off terrible, and the powerband feels like it is just weak. Kinda like it has decent power at 4k rpms, then it just drops from there.
