Over a period of time it does damage to the pistons and piston rings it drives the engine to over heat and blow. Thats why there is a red line there.

.... i was always told it is actually better to redline everygear for atleast 2 seonds to gain maxium horsepowr and speed from your motor, specially if u do have a honda with vtec since vtec kicks in at higher rpms.....

Find out what valves, springs, retainers, camshaft, lifters, you have and how much stress they can handle. Then you will find out if it's ok for you CAR to redline.

If you have a performance camshaft, better flowing exhaust and intake, fuel, then it should be fine as long as your EGT and AFR is ok.

The whole point of redline, and a rev limiter is to prevent damage to the engine. If you keep it at that point for extended periods of time can lead to over heating and premature wear, but doing it everyonce in a while (hell even a few times a day) will not hurt anything. Just realize that everything mechanical will wear out over a period of time, doing this will wear out parts faster (not that horribly though)

Red line and rev limit are not the same. There's a buffer between "the red" and the ECU imposed fuel and ignition cut. If you mean bouncing off the limiter...that's ****ing retarded. If you mean driving to just before fuel cut...well...it's abuse on the engine and it may cause excess stresses, but it's not something that should cause your engine to fail by itself. You'd think if the RPM's were dangerous they'd just move the fuel/spark cut lower.

I know that, I am saying that redline is where engine damage might start to occur if held for long periods of time. While rev limiter is usually about 500-800rpm's higher depending on the car, this is the highest the factory will let you rev on stock heads.

I never said they were the same thing, I said they are put in place to proctect the engine.

Regardless, it is still not a good idea to go redlining your car every second you are driving no matter what make or model you are driving. Moderation is the key.

Most cars don't make peak power near redline anyway. It's pretty stupid to keep the RPM's pegged there because you'd basically just be burning fuel faster. FI cars tend to be the exceptions to that general rule.
