Do's and Don't when nursing a bad transmission?

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd, auto... it has auto 4wd not all wheel drive but for you who don't know as soon as the rear wheels slip, the front axle engages to catch it. WELL, I have been told that I need a new transmission within the next year or so, between $1,500-$1,800 I guess. I am having no problems besides 3rd gear I think, it hesitates to downshift or it will hesitate to engage into third and kind of bump a bit. I was wondering if you had any nursing transmission do's and don't advice to get the most out of this. Thanks

1. Don't post Ford problems on here, we have enough of our own.
2. Fixed Or Repaired Daily
3. Do sell it to a family member.
4. DONT listen to me!!! I am just Joking of course

Dont know what to say, Sticks are easier to "nurse" and drive than when an automatic goes bad, good luck! If you were closer I could pull you one out of a junk-yard by someone who owes me "favors". Plenty of those there. pm me if you want me to get the part you need. you pay shipping, free part!

instead of buying an rifle, why don't you just fix the transmission?

or you would just go blow it on a hobbie you will probably do once in the next year.

i drive a 92 galant and my tranny is pretty old and uncooperative. sometimes the auto will like drop into nuetral and stay that way until i let it fall to idle. and yes it does this while im on the highway. what i do is try not to rev it up too much and try to keep it around cruising RPM on the highway.

Well I don't have enough money from my tax return to fix the transmission straight up and my budget is too tight to have adequit savings for it between my bills, I am getting my truck inspected in a couple weeks though it will pass so at leaste I have a year.
