(I don't actually know about the WRX auto, but I don't see why anyone would want a performance car with an auto either)

Hey, Ive actually driven one....
Needless to say it sucks. Im lazy, and I have an auto on my OZ, but its sooo bad I would never consider an auto on a WRX. Its very slow off the line, off boost. When boost comes on, its quick though. Lets put it this way, the car bogs so much off the line I think the OZ with a few mods would get a decent hole shot. When I drove it, some guy pulled up next to me in an older Grand Cherokee with the straight six, not V-8. Well we took off from the line, and the Grand Cherokee actually pulled ahead. (No brake torque when I launched) AT any rate, around 3 grand when boost came on the WRX smoked it.

So, Id advise staying away from the WRX with an auto. Its my belief the tranny shifts too soon, keeping the car away from where its actually running on boost from the turbo. Just my thoughts though.

its just a normal automatic tranny, no tiptronic stuff. But it does have a special center differential that's different than the mt version. I can't remember how since all the wrx owners I know have mts.

All the 9 and 8 sec WRX`s use auto tranny. Great for the drag strip, but at that power level lag is just rediculos. I had one 2002 WRX auto wagon and I did stop at one point with the mods, sold the wagon and I got the STI. I was already in to the 11`s with that wagon. I hope that I can go low 11`s or 10`s with the STI.
