And there is a 300hp supercharged version of the Atom.

That would be right around 3lbs per HP.

a typical '05 F1 car made 900+ hp, although the exact figure is a closely guarded secret for each team. for '06, they reduced allowable engine size from 3.0 liter V10's to 2.4l V8's with the intention of reducing hp by about 200. in all likelihood, the power will not go down much, if at all...F1 engineers are just too good.

1300 lbs/900+ hp < 1.44lb/hp

I know it's not a production car but I figured a little perspective would be good. A top fuel dragster weighs around 2200 lbs and makes at least 8000+ hp. That would be 3.63 hp per pound! That's stupid.

The ME4 12 would have a pretty good power to weight if its actually for sale... I don't really keep track of those super expensive cars I can never afford. My guess would be the Ariel Atom also, but thats debatable wether or not its a car. Heres something to think about, 06 Kawasaki zx10r... 385lbs 173hp... 2.2lbs per hp for about 12k brand new... too dangerous for me, but it sure is hard to beat that.

And where exactly can I buy one of those that passes DOT crash tests in the USA?

Right, Nowhere. The Atom is the highest bhp/ton you might acctually be able to buy here and thats fairly "grey market".

Maybe add a third variable to that. $/weight/power.

Hey this may actually be a fun exercise...

So for example let's take the Evo9?
286bhp
3263lbs
$31,399
$2,752 per weight/power ratio

Compare this to... let's say the F430
490bhp
3197lbs
$174,585
$26,758 per weight/power ratio

Evo9 for the win

I'm guessing you'd find 'budget' cars like SRT-4 will do well in this categorization.
