Explorer vs. WRX, not what you'd expect.

Hi guys. I was at the track the other day. It was street drags where anyone can race, from your mom's minivan to your uncle's corvette. Well I had my dad's WRX and a Ford Explorer lined up next to me. I thought to myself that I am not even gonna race this guy considering I will slaughter him. So I was just going to outdo myself. The tree lights green and I punch it. The guy in the Explorer does too and boy did he launch out of the pocket! He was pulling away from me! Not until I hit midtrack did I pass him. I know I still got him but that first half I thought I lost! And I had it floored. I was like " Come on go, go, catch him!" It was like I had no power! I know he is AWD as well, but he has all that weight. It was kind of embarrassing, almost beat by a soccer mom SUV. I thought I could beat him without even trying, maybe play with him a bit. And this was a regular Explorer, had no exhaust note, was quiet, and I am positive it isn't an SVT Explorer if there ever was one.
I just don't understand how a Ford Explorer can beat a WRX up to say 30-40 mph?!?!.

That's the beauty of an automatic with AWD and a big V8. He has instant hookup and low end grunt with an easy to launch automatic.

Look at the power delivery. Any modern SUV or Pickup will get a jump on a car like the WRX. It doesn't take long for the drag and weight to catch up to them, though.

The V8 Exploder has 290 HP and 300 lb-ft of torque but weighs about 4400 lbs.

Dude how hard is it to launch? I just punched the pedal. I don't need to shift, it's automatic. But I guess you're right, maybe I should have power braked it.

I guess it could be called Exploder considering its launch.
But seriously...if I held the brake and got my boost up at the start I am pretty sure I would have wasted him. I wish I brought my Evo. I would have been able to launch more quickly.
There are times like this I wish I had the new Shelby Cobra GT500, or a C6.

Hmm, yeah... WRX slushboxes aren't all that fast.
