STI Tranny not up to extra HP ??

I read this on the EVO site. Guess all the talk about their tranny's many BE true.

We're now working on a 3.0-litre turbo Impreza for Japan and Europe that will generate in excess of 350bhp.

"Unfortunately, we're having teething problems with the transmission as the current WRX STi six-speed box isn't capable of handling the torque the engine produces." Several solutions are being investigated, with the most popular being to ask a company such as Getrag, which has much experience in building heavy-duty gearboxes, to work on the transmission.

If you reread it, you'll note that they say it's not able to handle the type of torque that the motor produces, not hp.

Low-end monster torque is much harder on transmissions than high-end monster hp. All those 400+ hp Evo's are not making mountains of 2000rpm torque, they have a very nice peak a lot higher in the rpm band. Same for Subaru's that have been built up. The 6-speed in the Subaru has taken quite a bit of hp already, in excess of 500, but that's a very different type of hp from 350 developed by a 3.0-litre flat six turbo.

Paul,

Thanks for the clarification. I know that was an older post referring to a different motor setup. I have not heard of any early concerns pertaining to the 6-speed in the STi. Time will tell as it will with the 6-speed EVO VIII.
