2007 VW GTI or 2004 Volvo S60R?
Well, the time has come to replace the Lancer, and as much as an Evo might be fun, it's not in the cards. The options as I sit, having driven both cars are either a 2007 (drove an 06, basically unchanged in 07 except plus a few choice bits) VW GTI with DSG, or a 2004 Volvo S60R.
I love the GTI for it's handling, and the super sweet DSG. The biggest problem I have with it is the fact that it looks fast.
The S60R IS fast, and luxx. AWD, Leather, 300hp. It looks like an old man car, and it's a blast to drive. Not as much fun as the GTI, but many many more creature comforts, and AWD which would be nice in the New England weather.
Price isn't an issue, as the brand new VW (package 1, DSG) costs almost exactly what the 28000mi used Volvo does. They both come with warranties, and are being purchased from reputable dealers.
Which would you chose? Why?

I would go for the S60R. It's a fast car with more space, and AWD would be a lot better in the winter.
Although it does look a little conservative, as long as you enjoy the drive, it doesn't really matter. The new GTI doesn't look that great IMO anyways.

Volvo S60R. Sweet interior and fast car. My friends mom has a V70R and it just about keeps up with stock STis. Super plush interor (her's is red outside/rust-colored inside) - and it's not a cheap interior, the leather is thick as hell. Plus, they just look good. And 300hp with AWD.
If I were in the position to be making that kind of decision it would be a tough choice between that and maybe a CTS-V or an S4 - but the interior beats both of those hands down.

You would have to drag my cold, dead, body out of the drivers seat of my Evo.
But if you were to bury me and use one of those two as a coffin, I'd want it to be the S60R, however you better drive me to the funeral in the GTI bc the Volvo is a comfortable lifeless turd and the GTI is actually fun to drive.

get the volvo, the new GTI looks like a cross between a toyota yaris and a new beatle that was dropped on its head as a child
the volvo R is pretty slick, for a volvo
they also make it in station wagon form
there's a kid at school with the R station wagon, drives wicked fast, pretty sweet ride, i'd never live down the embarassment
awd makes you the man in the winter
