4g63 HELP
I have checked into insurance quotes and seen enough to know I cannot afford much however a car I can get into was a 2g TSi, GS-T or GSX... I plan on spending sub $10,000 when I get out of AIT for one however I was wondering if these cars are straight up headaches or if they are indeed reliable if modded right. I plan on tasteful minor mods with a max goal of say 300whp which is not hard to achieve with these cars, is crank walk that huge of a concern? How much would it cost parts and labor to do a 6 bolt block swap and does this take care of the problem or does 2G turbo DSM have random unpredictable problems in general, clutches, electrical issues etc etc. should I stay away?... there is not much I can buy that makes good power, looks good and is reliable. I will be home to buy in 3 weeks and DSMtuners has been down on my computer forever, help would be great. Thanks.
ok, here is the skinny.... You are buying a older vehicle and old cars have problems. Hoses get dry rotted, electrical contacts corrode, parts just wear out over time. Crankwalk is way overrated these days. Most cars that were going to walk have already done so. It is a rare occurance now that you see a post about someone walking anymore. That being said, this is a list of things to check for when buying a DSM:
-CHECK COMPRESSION!!!!
-try to buy a unmodded one for obvious reasons
-check turbo shaft play
-check the condition of the oil and look for excessive metalic particles
-let the car idle for a good 3-4 mins and then give it some gas to see if you see smoke(this will indicate bad valve shaft seals)
-check for funny smell under glove box.(this will indicate either a leaky heater core=pain is ***, or leaking ECU CAPS.)
- durring the test drive, be liberal with clutch slippage on take off and then put it in 5th at around 35mph and floor it. this will tell you if your clutch is on its way out the door.
- take the car on the highway and take it up to at least 75 to check for vibrations
- and last but not least, check for gear engagement. Worn syncros plague 1st and second gen DSMs.
-Also, check the VIN with any mitsu dealer and see if the transfer case recall has been done.

Well if the car looks good all you need to do is be the hell of out it till it blows then buy i knew one. Its not worth putting money into untill you get the 6 bolt. Its not the expensive to rebuilt a 6 bolt anyway but if your planning on racing it its another story.
