Got beatin by a Subaru WRX!?!? How?
Catless WRX's are good for very low 13s if driven correctly. That's on stock turbo without nitrous. That will definitely put the hurt on a stock EVO VIII. Now about the 5 cars, its either you can't drive or he was packing more mods.
BTW, he could have definitely had a FMIC on there. The APS unit is painted black, and is almost impossible to see, especailly at night. And my friend with the APS likes to joke around, and tell people he's stock. He finds humor in it, I guess...
A long time ago I was reading a book on driving technique that reported the best accelration is found when you time your shifts to drop you right down to the the spot where the peak torque output of the motor is.
Shifting at readline puts you about 1,000 rpm above the torque peak if I'm not mistaken. And if this theory is correct the shift point will very for each gear.

I think puff of black smoke after every gear change means VTA blow off valve. It does that because the air is vented to atmo, but the Air Pressure Sensor thinks it's been used, so pumps in more fuel into the engine, and hence puff of black smoke...
Give that, a new BOV is usually used when the stock one can't hold pressure - a dead give away that he's increased boost, or even upsized the turbo.

The boost going down higher up is not the issue here, as that's the same on the WRX.
There's only one explanation: the guy's WRX was modded. Think about it: why would a WRX guy ask you to race you if his car were standard? Maybe an STI, but a WRX?
Come on!
