Track car suggestions?
I'm pretty bored, and shopping for potential CHEAP track cars to get (road racing). So far I've come up with:
Civic EG hatch with swap
CRX with swap
Foxbody mustang 5.0
3rd gen camaro w/ v8
FC RX-7
S13 240SX
75-91 BMW 3 series
DSM
Sentra se-r
(Miata)
my budget is REALLY low! don't need it too amazing fast, it's more of a learning car for me probably. I'll keep it stock-ish, most likely, just take the exhaust off and strip the interior as much as I can.
I'm putting the miata on the list just so you guys don't suggest it, for personal reasons I'll never own a miata. I KNOW it's an amazing track car, but please don't suggest it for me.
addendum suggested by my buddy:
fiero
porsche 924
porsche 944
VW golf MK.II
P71 Crown Vic (we're really stretching the definition of track cars, huh?)

Volvo 242 or Porsche 944 or Fc Rx7
Volvo is the best choice for many reasons including cheapest, fastest, best upgrades. There is no car dollar vs dollar at the entry level of racing that can deliver like a Volvo 242. It has the greatest upgrade list as you can stick any motor you want into the car and almost everyone has guides for any specific motor (GN V6 Turbo, LS1, 351W, 5cylinder Volvo, 6cylinder Volvo!) It can use any mustang transmission with a simple adapter. It has a Dana rear end stock meaning upgrades that all jeep guys use will also work for your Volvo. Its suspension works great and its steering ratio is amazing as is the feel. The car is very light for its size at around 2700lbs and its actually a .34 drag coefficent. That is better then a S2000! (Yes, its a block but don't be fooled). The brakes from the factory are 4 piston calipers in the front and they will do the job on the racetrack with stock motor. They are easily upgradeable to 13" rotors and S60R brakes. The suspension can be tuned to give excellent handling. It looks amazing when in track form and most of all its cheap. Also you can make it fit into alot of different racing classes if you desire. Also with a cage in it the chassis really comes to life with stiffness and more then anything else its very safe and building a cage for it to be more safe is even easier.

Thanks, great info! I've never even though of that car before. It's good - light, cheap, and RWD. I maybe want to find one of the turbo models, because I don't think it would be prudent for me to do a motor swap.
As a former 1991 SE-R owner, I need to give a shout to this little car. For someone just learning their way around a track this is a great tool.
As you are more able to handle speed (and the power needed to generate it) through experience, there are engine upgrades (SR20DET, SR20VE) that will increase the possibilities.
Handling is also fairly easy to upgrade.
The downside...Weak trans at higher power levels, door sag on poorly kept cars, getting harder to find without major rust, monkeyed with by idiots, etc.
I wish I had kept my SE-R when I bought the Evo.
Good luck.
