Whats the most fun on four wheels for 20k?

I've got a GT-R on pre-order and I'm sick of waiting and want something now to play with. Just wondering what would you do for 20k? We're talking road cars, so no jeep/trucks/off road. keep in mind this is just a fun project and will not be a DD.

The criteria are:

1. No more than 20k (this includes the car/maintenance/wearables/mods)

2. Must be built with over the counter parts... no custom fab ish, basically anything you can do in an average home garage.

3.doesn't have to be pretty!

4. nothing too obscure that parts are a beast to find

5. must be 90s or newer

few ideas I've come up with are a turbo civic of some year/motor, a stock cobra/ mazdaspeed miata

any ideas?

DSM. For 6k you can get a 100% clean chassis and drop a monster motor in for pennies on the dollar.

How about a 90 or newer nissan 240sx with a sr20det transplant, I completed one of these projects for under 10k. I've owned a lot of performance cars, but pound for pound this one was the most fun of any. It's been running perfect for almost 3 years now.
My son owns and drives it now! He just had to have it (he switched to the Nissan from a Honda)

Yo don't want a WRX, specially the 02-04, maybe a STI but never that year WRX specially if you plan of doing any mods to it.

They make poor power with mods and you will have to have a separate savin account to keep up with the transmission failures let alone someone that could buy a 1 or 2 G DSM and spent $2000 or $3000 and bloww of the stickers of the WRX.

I would get a 2g DSM. I have a 98 GSX and loved it. Could get one for probably 6-7k, put some dollars into it and you have your self a beast.
