What a disappointment: Chevy Volt

http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/11/auto...ex.htm?cnn=yes

40 miles on the batt. + 300 miles on the gas motor. = pointless. my moms saturn gets a way better range then this crap on a full tank i can get 400+ miles on one tank all highway miles.

Look at the report at the bottom as far as what they think the price will be

340 miles?! I can do that with my MazdaSpeed 3 and still have some gas left. Is this the best that Chevy can do?

If you drive less than 40 miles to and from work or have a place to plug it in when you get to work you really never have to use gas so it will be beneficial for those people.

Erm, range isn't exactly an accurate way to compare the efficiency of two cars, and I really doubt that your mom's Saturn is capable of matching the efficiency of this car.

First off, 40 mile range all electric is handy for many, many people's commutes. Second, the backup gas generator is only 1.4 liters, so it's not going to burn a whole lot of fuel. This thing probably has a tiny fuel tank.

this car is only pointless if your taking a road trip over 300 miles... for 99.9999 percent of us its not a bad car.. i drive 25 miles each way.. and can plug in at work, so this car would be great for me.. and especially since the ride home is free!(off company elec.) so im looking forward to it as a d.d. now if i wanted to go outa town or something then its either a rental or take the evo.. either way u win... but its going to take a long time to make up for the price.. 40k +++ with dealer markup.. probably 50-60.. the first year.. thats a lot of gas for my 3500 dollar 240sx that gets 30mpg.. and is only 400 bucks a year to insure.

When GM does something revolutionary it's completely pointless however, if Toyota were to make the 3rd gen Prius this way it would be raved about. 75% of America drives less than 40 miles a day to work.

Took a trip from chicago to atl (3 times)set the miles on 0 once the car started to choke up i stoped to put in gas each trip i was getting 400-440miles on a full gas tank.

Not everyone is going to jump up and pay $40grand for this car lol. I say its not going to sell very well.

The VW TDI jetta or whatever its called gets over 30+ on city along 40+ on highway. This car is pointless. Now tell me this when your at work and your in the parking lot how the hell you going to charge your car running a cord from the building i dont think so. I know that in every office building ive worked in wont let you do that at all because of the risk if the cord where to be cut and it rain byebye car. Not everyone works less then 40miles round trip. I know people that drive 50-80miles just to get to work so people dont have a choice.

Obviously a Prius is pointless as well. My friends TDI get's 50 highway which is insane for a car with crude technology. Once the price goes down it will sell, also its the appeal of "econo friendly."

If it was 100 miles on battery and 300 on gas I would be ecstatic.

I drive 36 miles to work. So 72 miles round trip. I would have to charge it at my work (which I could do.) But 100 miles would be SO much better. Any word on official pricing?

I just put a 100 gallon tank on a F350 that gets 8 mpg...I can go 2x farther than a Volt.....OMG rock and rollzerrs!!1!11 GM fails. Prius sucks. Volt sucks. F350 wins.

Range is a terrible way the judge a car. I wouldn't care if a car had a 200 mile range as long as I'm getting 100mpg+.

With the Volt, if one's average driving distance is 60 miles, they will get the equivalent of ~150 mpg. How many people drive more than 60 miles per day? Even at 80 miles, you'd get 100 mpg! If you can plug in at your destination, mpg would be infinity, lol.

Not bad at all for many. My old commute was 18 miles, now it's 32 miles, I have no quams at all and the technology will only get better.

Thats american ingenuity thinking outside the box. Of course we have a few ignorant folks in this thread who know of better ways to use ZERO gas daily commute but extended range if the owner wants to take a trip.

The savings is gone if you ever have to pay to replace the batteries.

FYI: When these start showing up used with no warranty, people are gonna get screwed.
