My "other" car...
My "other" car...
Totally worthless for all but 4 months out of the year here in MI, but I still love it.
Before I got my X GSR I had an Acura TSX. It was the second car I'd bought brand new and by far the most expensive (until the X). I traded an RSX in for it, which I had Tein SS' on. Since the RSX has MacPhearson style suspension in the front, the toe changes when you change ride height. When I put the stock suspension on it to trade it in, the toe was all messed up. When I drove it 35 miles to the dealer to trade it, the tires were hot and stunk like rubber. They knew I was putting stock sus. back on and that they'd have to re-align the car.
Stupid me - forgot the title at home. I told them that I didn't want to put another 70 miles on the RSX with the tires the way they were, and asked them if they had a demo I could go home with and bring back the title. They threw me the keys to a brand new Miata. Keep in mind it was an awesome day out, sun shining, and I'd never driven a convertable before. I put the top down and cruised home. I LOVED the **** out of that car. It wasn't the fastest car ever, or the nicest, but something about it put a smile on my face all the way home and all the way back.
By the time I got back to the dealer I was THIS close to saying "cancel the paperwork on the TSX - I want one of these instead" but I didn't. Since they've been unchanged for so long (except engine size), I was able to pick up an old one for CHEAP ($2,300), and it's ever bit as fun as the brand new one.
Its originally a Texas car, so it has no rust (which is rare for any car in MI). It's a 1990, so it's damn near 20 years old - which makes its rust-less-ness even more rare around here. It's slow, and it leaks a bit of oil, but on nice days it's every bit as fun to drive as the X... maybe somtimes even more.

I'm eventually going to get some springs for it to lower it, and some stuff needs to be replaced (the rear bumper is sun-faded and cracking a little... go Texas), but for the most part it's pretty solid. I'd like to swap in a 1.8 from a 94+ Miata, but I need to do some research first about wiring and what ECU I need and what not (I've done Hondas, this would be a breeze). I've replaced a lot of stuff on it already, and if I decided to keep it (vs getting a newer one), "faster" is the next thing on the list. :-)

Sweet car.. I had the same car, red, 92, black cloth interior in inmaculate condition. I love the interior and the driving position but I quickly realized how a little underpower the car was. 115hp wasn't enough for a guy like me.
I considered back then doing the cheap Greddy 15C turbokit which there was on sale for $1150 but I realized it wasn't enough. What year is your? 89-94 with the 1.6l?
Congrats anyways, you got one of the best cars ever made.

Watch out for short nose crank issues with the 90', but if you plan a 1.8 swap that'll be irrelevant. The swap is supremely simple. Flyin' miata even sells a kit with everything you need for cheap.
Reminds me how I bought my 2000, saw it at the dealer on the side of the road as a trade in and figured I'd go see what condition it was in. They tossed me the keys and after one sideways slide around the highway onramp I turned around and bought it.

get some sway bars from flying miata. best upgrade for the money.
Do the 1.8 swap. an s2k engine is a silly idea, the mazda 1.8 is easier to get power out of. a 13b swap is a tremendous aobut of work, which is why no one makes aftermarket kits for it. The ls6 would be sweet, but 20K+ by the time its done.
get a rollbar as well.
