HELP On 3000GT VR4! Suggestions? Opinioins?

My co-worker is looking into getting a 3000GT VR4. He has been looking into this one on ebay. The car is at Pruven Performance in CT. There asking $6k...my co-worker is willing to spend $4k-$4.5k. Its got some problems...instead of explaining i'll let you read the description direct from the ebay link:

"THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT RUN. It was brought to our shop on a flatbed ( that means it didn't run before it came into our shop). The car clearly had a jumped timing belt. We removed the heads and found some of the valves were bent. We refurbished the heads and reinstalled them. The vehicle still did not run after that. After much trouble shooting we found the vehicle has a faulty wirng harness. We were waiting to hear from he owner to see if he wanted to fix the vehicle, but he dissappeared for a few years. So the car has sat here at our shop for 4 years unfinished. Since we are a licensed repair facility with the State of CT, we filed a lean on it with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The lein was granted, a suppliment title was issued, and we now own this vehicle. The Vehicle is highly modified. The car has 20g turbos, tubular manifolds, custom downpipe and exhaust, large side mount intercoolers, larger injectors, larger fuel pump, tial wastegates, AEM engine management, forged engine, misc gauges, aftermarket clutch, etc...The car dfinitely needs some TLC to get it back into shape and when it does get back into shape, it will be something special. We have put together 3000gt's with much smaller turbos and made just around 500 wheel horsepower, so I imagine this car will definitely pass that number by a longshot when it's running correctly."

To me this sounds a little fishy. I feel there might be some other problems with it. If its really just the wiring harness why not replace it or remove the AEM EMS. I also don't like how the shop doesn't know anything about the car. Co-worker said they don't know how long its been modified like this for, and all they say is "upgraded" this, bigger "that"....kinda seems like a custom build maybe?
My co-worker is wanting to go to the shop tomorrow to see it in person and talk with them. So i want some of your opinions on what he should do? What should he ask when he goes? Is it worth it? Let me know what you guys think or if any of you know about this car. Thanks!!

i dont now too much about them, but sounds like he's gonna have to dump quite abit of money in it to get it running correctly. if he doesnt mind that tell him go for that if not tell him forget it and keep looking.

I would be concerned about a car that a tuner shop can't figure out. Either it is so much wrong with it they don't want to invest any more in it, or they just want to unload it quickly enough before the original owner comes back. I know they went through the legalities of making it there's, but still. Sounds like they are just trying to get rid of a science project and don't feel like investing the time and money into making it work right.

My buddy bought a VR-4, and when he wanted to do any work on it it was BIG $$$$$$$.

Stuff happens to people and the bit about getting it retitled sounds legit (just double check), there is a similar law in Michigan.

If its been there that long and they want to get rid of it... offer them 4k-4.5k and if anything scrap it for parts... I still see alot of 3000 GTs and i'm sure there are people willing to pay for used aftermarkets.

Is this car pearl yellow??? (Can't see link at work)

If so, I went to Pruven 2 summers ago and saw that car, and asked what was up with it, and the guy stated just as the add stated, that it was heavily modified with the AEM EMS, and there was a wiring bug somewhere in the car that they couldn't find.

It looked like a nice car for sure, but they don't know if it was the wiring of the EMS for sure.

To me it seems as if someone butchered the wirinng harness on it, and they cant find it.

It will definitely take a lot of money to get it back up and going right, as others have stated. I have a 93 Steatlh T/T and I bought it with a bad motor for pretty cheap, and trust me that wasn't a cheap fix. So, you know a wiring harness or electrical bug isn't going to be either.

He may want to keep looking, there are some nicer ones out there without wiring issues for around the same price or cheaper.

for the money he wants to spend, he's much better off with a 1st or 2nd gen eclipse or talon. he's looking at a money pit when he can buy a car that's easily modded, just a fast and much more reliable.

Been there done that, I had a couple of Stealth R/T twin turbos(91 and 94'). My experience tells me that if that car has been abandoned for 4 years in a shop it reflects not only the poor care of the previous owner but also the lack of commitment from that shop. I think that in some places by law you can kick a car out of your premises if the owner doesn't pick the car up after 30 days. I would never allow a shop(any shop) to have my car for such long period of time.

It is not worth it from any point of view. You can find good running 3000 GT VR4 from people that really care about their cars and can show you some maintenance records. If that shop couldn't figure out what is wrong then either they are incompetent or the car has bigger issues.

I purchased my first Stealth R/T TT knowing that the turbos were fried due to oil lines being clogged possibly by using cheap non shsyntetic oil or the owner not waiting to cool down the turbos. In that case I knew replacing the turbos was the fix so I did. In this case there are some hidden discrepancies. Besides all that, this car is pricy to repair.

I don't recommend to buy it, walk away. Another thing and this is only my observation, it doesn't look good when a shop has a car sitting there for years. my .2c

Carlos

I owned a 93 3000 GT VR-4 for a couple of years and loved it.I really wouldn`t get one that already had mods done to it becuase just about everything on the car is expensive and difficult to replace.Just try to find a stock one with low miles and mod it.These cars ar really hard to find in good shape though.

That one looks like a mess to fix lol I daily drive a '92 Stealth RT TT with 81k miles on it and it's a PITA to work on since it's so hard to get to stuff. I always wanted one and got a pretty good deal on it though...

Keep looking...I found mine on Ebay last winter with 76k miles, a Borla and Eibachs, original owner for 5.4k...Have since done an intake, bov, full catless TBE and lil bits here and there and love the car
