my old mans car
Used to have an '02 Lancer. We recently sold our 02 Mustang GT. Was looking at every Evo in the area, but fell on hard times and had to settle for much less. Also having a 1 yr old makes me think more 'maturely' for now.
'98 Passat GLS - 1.8t 5spd, 78k miles on it. Stock as a rock, except the cheap-o cone intake I slapped on it. Polished the headlights, the passenger one is crystal clear, driver one still has some cloudiness, think it might be on the inside.
What do you think?

and Photoshop fun.
150hp of amazing fury @ 7psi. Seen chips online that bump it up to 16psi that should get me around 200hp. Only time will tell. Soon as I get out of school an Evo is coming, but a house may be in order first.

The motor in the passat only came with 150hp? Thats odd that the lighter gti comes with 180hp. That Passat must really understeer with the engine so far ahead of the suspension.

Did you use a simple headlight restoring polish or did you take off the upper layer of oxidation?
The passenger side is starting to look clear but the driver side looks completely fuzzed over. I doubt it could be that bad from the inside. If you take a knife and scrape off a small layer of the yellow oxidized stuff, it's like, maybe 20 thou thick.
Take some 200-400 grit and totally demolish the first like 10-15 mil's of the headlamp, it'll look like total s**t afterwards. Then move on to 800 grit. Then 2000 grit. Then finally use mcguires plastx.
I've restored headlights that looked worse than that to almost clear condition that way. Cept from 2000 grit I move onto 6 micron diamond paste (get it at work) then plastx.

vw's are junk..i blew my motor in my 1.8t with just a giac chip and exhaust. grenaded the tranny 3 times and had it beefed up the last time and still took a **** that was enough.

Scary. I have a GIAC in my r32 and drive it quite spiritedly from time to time and it has been good to me for 74k. An axle boot ripped off but its hard to pinpoint why that happened.

Well.. I am sure you haven't read otherwise you wouldn't be blowing wistles and ring bells about your car. The 4th gen VW have more electrical problems than you could posibly ever ask for.
The 4th gen VW were skipped by many potencial buyers for their notorius electrical issues otherwise the engine is great and can make huge gains with simple bolt ons while maintaining good gas mileage. I think you will be happy for now until you move into something else.
Gaood luck and remember me whenever you have an electrical issue. pssshhhhh, go ahead and buy yourself a window regulator, before you blink your eyes is going bad.

those pics were before the headlight polishing.
yeah im an avid reader of vwvortex.com and passatworld.com and all you read are horror stories.
just today the CEL came on with a rough idle. basic assumption is a coilpack went bad. gonna check it out tomorrow when its bright outside.
well aware of all the preventative maintence. first thing i want to do is get the Timing Belt done ASAP since i heard those go well before the 105-120k the factory recommends..most change them every 60-75k miles.
For now, with a chip and exhaust it'd push it to probably 165-170whp which is enough for now(i say that now of course) to last me until we get back on our feet. Im going to college this fall and hope to get a real job finally.
Than its 2 priorities once that happens 1. House 2. Evo =)
