General ignition electronics question - Mazda

I'm wiring up an aftermarket ignition on my brothers Mazda, and I've got it all wired per directions, and the car starts after some coaxing, but it idles like ****. I went back through my splices, and I think I found the problem, but I'm not 100% sure...

There is a bare wire wrapped around the tach signal wire, I think it's a ground. It's currently not attached to the tach signal wire at all, and I can't remember if it ever was. I did some wiring on my old FD several years ago, and I remember it having the same type of wiring in a few places, and the grounds were attached to the wires. Should I solder the ground to the tach signal wire? The same condition exists on another wire that goes to the negative on the coil, and it also has a non attached ground.

If this is the cause of it running badly, and these wires are supposed to be grounded, why does it start? I'm relatively new to this.... Thanks!

for anyone to be of any use, it would be nice to see some kind of schematic. there should be some sort of schematic with the part/ and or a chilton or haynes manual. also, what the hell kind of mazda are we talkin about here? more info would be nice. good luck.
