89 Ninja 250 Help

so my friend has an 89 Ninja 250 and my other friend decides to go to his house when he's not home and take the bike out for a joy ride only to end up pushing the bike back home. the bike doesn't start and it seems like it's stuck in gear (not sure which one). it doesnt wanna shift into any other gears. the bike cranks but wont turn over. the bike rolls forward a little when it's cranking which is what makes me think it's in a gear. do you guys think the issues are related? any ideas on what could be the problem? i was pretty good with my k5 GSX-R600, but i dont really know much about a bike this old.

Weird. I'd say even with a bum clutch, should be able to get back into neutral. Check the starter. It's odd that you can't change gears.

I can see you guys walking the bike all the way home while cranking it and pushing haha.

we have no idea. the bike was working fine before my other friend pretty much "stole" is to go on that joy ride. we have no idea what he did while he was riding it and what caused the bike to die. we're gonna do a major tune up on it (plugs, wires, etc.) and then see if that fixes the problem.

Serves him right for taking something that wasn't his. If I were the owner of that bike I'd report it stolen and damaged and file a claim with insurance and report it to the police.

I don't know bikes well, but I'd go with the clutch, and clutch cable first as a point of failure for it being stuck in gear.
