1991 CRX SI - need opinions

Hey Guys,

im extremly new to honda's, and I am not looking for the honda sucks or honda this or honda that, if you got something to add, great, if not, please try your best to add negative comments...

i bought a 1991 honda crx si with a b16a2 engine and I am thinking of doing a full build and making it a dedicated track car, i think.

i am not sure with what block I wanna go with buy here are the power mods that i am thinking of:

skunk2 turbo cams
full race 50 trim turbo kit - nice price by full race, thanks Eric
ported head
Skunk 2 intake manifold
skunk2 dual springs and titanium retainers
AEM EMS
some type of ignition system - haven't looked into that yet
Quaife Quick Steering Rack
Built transmission
Exedy Clutch with 8 lb flywheel
Possibly water injection

Things I need to know:

will running E85 on this setup make anymore power or the same power as gas?
what kinda injectors am i going to need
would a fully built B16 block be okay or do I need to do an LS VTEC

With the build, I am hoping for somewhere around 300-350 whp on whatever the car can make on a semi safe tune. I think any more power than that in a fwd is going to be a joke and not really be able to hook up....

anyone build a similiar car or similiar setup

anyone use a FR50trim Turbo kit on a honda? what kinda boost and spool and power did you make?

Any help would be appreciated

I don't trust anyone in the honda forums - id rather stick to my trustworthy group here at evo m

Thanks Guys,

Might wanna edit that lol

Replace the transmission instead of rebuilding and go K20A, then go NA, you may get up to about 260whp and won't have to worry too much about torque steer. Dedicated track car as in road racing car or a drag car? For drag racing probably go K24A then turbo.

I would give up my Evo for a clean CRX with a proper K swap all day long.

You have a lot of research to do. Putting together a Honda and Mitsubishi are two different things.

For example Honda's most popular tuning software is supported by Hondata. I've rarely seen Honda tuners using AEM EMS.

But I'd definitley look into a K-Series swap, it's not cheap, but you'll love the car.

Check out K20A.org

Thanks for the posts guys.....

The only reason why I wanted to go with an AEM is because a certain local shop with two amazing tuners with AEM are there and im sure will do most of my tuning...

I do know about hondata and if AMS is cool with learning the software to tune it, I could care less...

I know about the k20 swap but I didn't really want to switch out the electrical items such as the gauges and such.... I know you can also do an LS VTEC which i know is a pretty proven setup. I guess I will have to look at the K20 / K24 engine setup...

When i built my evo I built it for the sound purpose of being a street / drag / track car....

I would like the same ability with this car to some degree, i want it street legal just so I can go terrorize some sti's in the area but really for tracks....

I figured with 300-350 in a crx with good tires and a driver mod that it should put the car in the low 12's and to me, that is very respectable.

I guess you are a typical evo nut swinger and the evo is the only car thats cool

i think if you got out of your mind the typical honda and actually drove a built a properly setup and tuned honda you might be a bit surprised but thats okay, I don't expect anyone to like my intentions.

I have my evo 500 whp 465 trq

I have the ultimate street setup I feel with my evo and I want something that I can take to the track, beat the **** out of it and if it breaks it breaks and not worry about it, also, cheap to fix....

You aparently dont do much with your evo besides drive it huh? Get an evo ready for a track day or a track car or a drag car and then possibly tell me that a cheaper alternative that is proven fun doesn't start to make a bit more sense

If I were you I would not build the block at all. Get some head studs new gaskets timing belt etc and call it a day. 350hp is a very easy in a honda. I had a 89 crx si with a d16 stock block and head and was at 305hp with a gt28rs turbo and short ram manifold tuned with neptune. Thing was a freakin beast. I really do miss that car. Injectors wise you would prob want to go with 650s or maybe bigger.

alright cool......

i don't 1/2 *** builds though so I will do it to have it done for reliability... the easier the car has it to make the power the better - allows more room

other mis. items on the build:

full suspension
cage - powder coated to match the car whatever that will be
kosie rims - very light and cheap - right up my ally
sparco or bride seats
redo the interior - carpet and such
repaint
etc etc...

Def going to need slicks if you want to do anything at the track. I had lenso rims with M&H slicks on mine tire and wheel combo together weighted under 30lbs i believe very light...

Well, i have pretty much the setup your going for. I have a 91 CRX Si turbo with a JDM b16. I'm actually in the process of rebuilding an extra B16A2 out of my stolen 99 Si with all skunk2 internals.

One thing i would change is the skunk2 turbo cams. After talking to a bunch of tuners, the Skunk2 Pro series stage 1 will be much better.

Right now i'm running a t3/t4 turbo and it spools pretty quick, about the same as my evo. The whole engine is stock and has no issues in 4 years of the setup. Solid engine, but i also dont beat on it.

As far as the ECU, i have hondata but my friend has the AEM one and it works good too but i'm not sure if its as usuer friendly as the hondata.

Just as many honda guys run stock internals. My theory is as long as you are tuned properly the internals on the honda blocks are farely strong to a certain point. Ive known a few people who ran upwards of 400hp on the stock block and they were fine. I also dont see the point in spending money on something that isnt broke lol...

^^True. The only reason i plan on changing the internals is when i get new cams because it is required. The only thing that is staying is the crank because it comes forged from the factory. Other than that i'm cleaning house.

Why is it required to change bottom end internals when you replace the cams?
