I traded my 03' Cobra in for my EVO.
By no means does the EVO even compare to the 03' Cobra in speed. The Cobra is a flat out beast. I went from a 2000 ITR to my Cobra and was actually surprised how well the Cobra handled for how heavy and big it was. It is no slouch in the twisties, but I will admit that will have trouble hanging with a EVO in the twisties.
Now about the road course? It all depends on what kind of course your talking about. If it is a rather small course with lots of turns the Cobra will have it's time keeping up, but if it is a larger course with more straights the EVO has no chance. Either way...the Cobra will not be destroyed by the EVO on either IMO.
My Cobra went 7.90's at 89 mph with DR's bone stock. No EVO will do that stock. The car dynoed 390.2 hp. - 375.8 trq. totally stock. I had plenty of kills with that car. 2 E46 M3's, 911 Carrera, 350Z (lol), andsome C5 Vettes just to name a few.
I had my 03' for about 6 months and had nothing but problems with it. To be honest, I'd still have the car if I could only find a dealer that knew what the hell they were doing with it.
I actually thought about trading it back in for another 03' Cobra because they were having specials on the one's that were still in stock. I work for Ford Mo. Co. and get the A-Plan, but I just didn't feel the need to go deeper into debt and loose more money on another car.
They are two totally different cars and shouldn't really be compared really. I'm married now and live further away from work now so the EVO is more practical for driving in all weather and for a family man so I'm happy.

Admission: I have never driven a Cobra before.
BUT: 390hp (wheel??!!) is not to be trifled with.
Pardon me for being direct, but the Evo has had its fair share of God-like worshipping.
Yes, the Evo will handle better than Cobra, that's my guess.
But will the Evo spank the Cobra on ANY road course? I don't think so.
A road course that has pretty long straights should suit the Cobra quite nicely. I would think the Cobra will do quite well in Sepang F1 circuit, most likely posting better times than the Evo.
On the other hand, I have also been to much smaller road course, where differences between GC8 STi and the latest greatest STi are minute. THIS is I guess where the Evo can shine.
But I digress
Sticking to the topic: I would choose the Evo mainly because it has 4 doors.

I cross shopped them a little before buying the EVO. At that time the Ford dealer wanted a $4k markup. Now you can get one for the same money as an EVO. For me, the Cobra cockpit was too small - I'm 6' 3" and I'm not skinny. The EVO fits better. Also the Cobra clutch felt like I was on an exercise machine. BTW, one of my golf buddies is a service writer at a Ford dealer. He took a new Cobra out for a spin and promptly wrung off the transmission input shaft.
Think about this...
most mustangs that run low 11's or break into the 10's are trailer queens that get towed to the track.
An evo with only about $2-3000 in mods can run the same times, and drive off. plus it will still outhandle any mustang. c'mon...evo all day long
my motto has been and always will be, "**** a ******* mustang!"

Even though the Mustang will hold its value better than the Evo and will hold onto its transmission longer, it's probably not worth the extra money. Modding? Say hello to no warranty and no resale value.

I've never driven a Mustang Cobra, but I have raced one, and I rode in it too. Cobras have an INCREDIBLE sound to them. They also handle quite well. The torque was ***** to the wall. The Evo, however is a more unique car, you rarely see them, and from what I've seen get more respect and more looks. Not to mention I live in Chicago, and driving an SVT Cobra in the winter (9 months out of the year) would be absolute hell. I'll stick with the Evo.

Give me the same in my Evo and I'll see you at the track (in my rear view mirror).
This is a stupid question really. We all did choose our Evos over a Cobra (in fact I got rid of my 03 Mach 1 for mine) so doesn't that answer your question?
Cobra - Great drag racing car.
EVO - Rally Car, Road Racing, twisty dominator, All-Weather dominance, seats 5 people, great driving dynamics, decent fuel economy.
I wonder which one I choose?

By the way, the Cobra is not a good drag car. No good drag cars come with IRS.
I have always been a Ford person and love Mustangs..but I chose the Evo over the Cobra for the overall better package it offers. I like that it has awd (for Ohio winters), 4 doors, and world class handling/steering response. I currently have 2 Mustangs, a '69 Mach 1 428CJ r-code and a '92 5.0 that runs 10.2's on stock shortblock.
Either choice..Cobra or Evo would be a good choice. They're just different in what they offer.
