I was thinking the ring gear separated.

If the ring gear separated while the car was running it would probably shoot shards of steel through the bellhousing. More likely, the pressure plate has backed off the locating pinions and the bolts are gone.

What could the damage be? I have a new clutch kit that I can put in just awaiting to pull gearbox...

Pull the trans off and look. It's the only way to know for sure.
