got my evo a little friend
To answer your questions: The CVT isn't that hard to get used to: it gets up to speed then adjusts. Once it is up to speed there is no drone. The 'continuous variable' part of it does help it get 29 mpg with 4wd. Plus when you shift to paddle shifters, it does 'seem' to pick up quicker instead of focusing on economy.
As to the speed, let me tell you up front that it obviously is no evo. Speed wise it is not and should not be compared to an evo. However for its features, 4wd, mpg, and capability, I didn't get to be lightning fast, I have my evo for that.
But for the snow, for road trips, for carrying people and items, for its tech and that legit panoramic moonroof that covers the front and back seat, the Outlander Sport is a legit car, and a great road trip machine.
