b's not here to give details, but last he was around his tranny was shot. I believe his last experience was it dumping fluid all over the dealership's floor and they refused to fix it because the fluid didn't match stock fluid or something. He'll explain more when he comes back. From my reading, Subarus have notoriously bad transmissions and interiors, but everything else seems very nice.

I happen to be a huge fan of the 2.5rs. A TC'd 2.5 with a rebuilt suspension could (for the most part) eat a WRX for breakfast. ...Although it's not WRC legal, I don't think you'll have to worry about that.

EDIT: Subaru needs to shoot whoever designed the tails for the new Imprezas though.

To be honest, the GC8 (older body style) 2.5RS is fun to drive for a while. However, the lack of mid-top end really hurt the long run. Turbocharging this car can be a good alternative. There are a handful of Turbo kits available for the RS.

However, the downside, the weak tranny that can't really take too much power, and the less-than-satisfying built quality.

For more info....check the i-club

My brother owns a GC8 Style 2.5rs, 2000 Well, the only glaring problem with them is the clutch, he had to replace his within a year due to extreme slippage. Maybe it was his driving style.. but any clutch should last longer than that. When it was taken out, there was barely any contact surface left. Well, he had it replaced with a new clutch, an ACT clutch and it works great. The tranny is rated at 300-310 hp max. www.I-club.com is the subaru owners group.

Seems like most of them suffer the same problem.

The MY00 and 01 models are not the ideal ones to be turbocharged (weaker piston, a handful of blown engine RS on i-club are 00-01 models). The 99 engine is the best to be turbo amongst the RS years. However, MY99 suffers from the infamous MAS problem...check project 2.5RS in SCC

MY98 has an DOHC EJ25, which is different than the later years model.

Baddest WRX in TX...

My lil bro drives a 2000 White 2.5RS with lots of STi parts. Awesome little car. That car makes anyone feel like a champion WRC driver. It is alot more fun to drive than my 2G GSX or 1G TSi. I only hope the EVO drives as awesome. It is a little slow up top though. Lots of driveable torque.

Just an FYI... This WRX uses a 2.5 block with WRX heads and it puts out mad power. This guy auto-x with us here in Austin and I can't wait to catch a ride with him. Pretty serious ride. I think the 2.5 is an awesome engine with about 7-10 lbs of boost. It is a great setup for auto-x with the torque the wieght ratio with AWD.

I have a 99 2.5RS with 61,000 miles, never had a single problem. Throw a few suspension mods on it and you have a great track and auto-x car. Power is descent, but nothing mind boggling, but hey, thats why your also getting an Evo.

Get a year 2000 or 2001 if you can. The MAP sensors are a bit easier to deal with as far as engine mods. I really abuse mine. I've had the clutch bearing replaced awhile back. If you decide to keep it, and if you can deal w/ the mess, go for a swap...w/ full tranny. The swap will give you a much stronger tranny which would withstand the abuse that you can dish out.

The Evo is nice, but I'm not sure I'll be able to handle the reliability. Perhaps it would be a nice second car.

Car blows as a drag car (yeah how's that tara =P). After taking it to a rally-x or an auto-x you'll love it.

What the RS is made to do

The driver is a hottie too....hope Ryan doesn't see that and kick my ***

If you don't plan on taking the RS on the dirt or the track don't get it. There are much better looking and faster in a straightline cars for the same price.

well first of all that's cause you can't drive it...and second of all cause you drive a pussymatic.

Great cars, my 98 has somewhere around 75k miles on it and just now needs a replacement clutch. That's it. The 00 had around 25k miles on it and doesn't need a thing.

I will say this my car (the 00) is much faster then the 98 but the 98 has way more top end then the 00. No top end = suck at the strip. I will rectify that soon enough.

Bry when you head up here I'll show you what a real RS can do.
