2011 Subaru WRX/STI or 2012 GT 5.0 Need Some Help

Hey guys,

My name is Chase, I purchased a 2008 evo X MR in the beginning of 2010. Simply put, I am not happy with my evo. I also found out buying a "new" 2 year old car was a absolutely retarded idea.... Hello depreciation

Current issues with car
  • Transmission Shifts like complete ***
  • Horrendous gas mileage, I average 12-14MPG (I don't beat the hell out of it either) Mitsubishi has no clue why it's so bad. I have tried various tunes to no effect. Getting comments about I drive an EVO... My buddies Legacy GT with 400+WHP is getting better MPG, so it's definately not the HP. Oh and I'm back to stock now, disregard my sig.
  • Barely enough room in the trunk to buy groceries
  • Terrible service at Mitsubishi. (I actually had good service at one dealership, until it got closed down)
  • Again, I hate the transmission
I live in Toronto, Canada, so we get a decent amount of snow, which strays me from the Mustang. I test drove both the 2011 WRX STI and the 2012 Mustang GT, both I felt were great cars. I also have the option of just the WRX, which might actually make more sence considering I don't goto the track. 335 is most likely out of the question, as to get one within reasonable price range, would put me back at 2008 with 60k KM's.

As it stands it looks like the WRX STI and Mustang GT will be roughly the same monthly payments, whereas the WRX will be a little cheaper. Also Mitsubishi was trying to get me into a 2011 GSR (doubtful thats going to happen considering all the other issues are still there)

I was completely dead set on the Mustang GT until my friend persuaded me to test drive the STI, which I actually liked a lot.

I'm not looking for massive power, maybe just a tune/exhaust. If I wanted to blow the doors off people and get a crazy rush I would just hop on my GSXR ..

Any comments / suggestions? Thanks guys!

Because of your location, I really would stay away from anything RWD. The Sti surely sounds like the car for you.

The Sti is cool. My friend just bought a 2011 sedan in White. Large and hot
The only thing is as you surely know is the priblems with the ringlands.
But if it's brand new you still have a warranty
After that build it...

WRX. Use the extra money you would have spent on STI payments to pay the WRX off sooner. Sounds like this is just meant to be a fun DD so no real need for the STI goodies.

Going to Subaru tomorrow to run the numbers on the STI. I have a feeling its going to be way more money than the GT 5.0. Right now Ford has $4000 in factory incentives, which is kinda hard to beat.

We shall see

Get the STI and never look back.

Forget the WRX, it has too many inferior components (such as the glass tranny and the list goes on from there) to even be seriously considered.

sounds like the same experience I had with my EVO X SE. terrible performance, and gas mileage. good luck with your decision. I hope the STi, or Mustang are better for you.

So my trade-in-value is absolutely terrible, have over a $10,000 carry over. The subaru dealership is giving me absolutely terrible trade-in. I could basically purchase a M3 for how much the STI would cost. The ford dealership isn't giving me much better for my car, however they are taking off approx 8K on a 2011 Mustang GT. Unfortunately the car is in white, I prefer black. After test driving the Mustang GT 5.0 for awhile, I didn't feel overly impressed with the acceleration. Granted it has nice linear power, I found my tuned evo to be pretty comparable.

My girlfriend actually said my evo felt faster when I stabbed the accelerator. (I felt the same thing) The mustangs interior is WAYYY better though.

All in all, the mustang is 100 more per month then i'm currently paying. Not impressed with the color, so I am waiting til something else comes along.

Might double check on a used 135 or 335.

with that much negative equity I wouldn't even think of trading in...that's one hole you will just fall deeper into if you trade-in again

and I sell cars for a living. it literally pains me to see this happen to people, and there's nothing the dealership can do about it - you simply owe banks money by contract and there's nothing you can do about it.

everyone's different though - something I learned through the car business. some are ok with the rolling 5k negative equity from new car to new car. I'm not

Owned a 2008 EVO MR and have driven many versions of the 2008+ STI and the Mustang is the much better car but you will have to outfit it with winter tires if you plan on driving it in the winter and even at that it's never going to be as good of a winter car as an EVO/STI. In the summer however it's much more fun as a Mustang GT with the Brembo option will easily outrun and outhandle an STI. Microsoft Sync actually works very, very well and the Mustang interior especially in upgraded trim is a much, much nicer place to be than the horribly cheap, rattle trap interior of the STI. Mustang has paint that actually resists the odd rock chip unlike Subaru paint that chips and rusts even worse than Mitsubishi paint. Lot's of people that winter drive their WRX/STI's in Calgary are having rust issues with 2008+ cars.

Local 2009 WRX. Common issue with rust bubbling up under the paint (it's not rail dust). I would expect in the east where it's more humid it will be much worse.

WRX/STI's are amongst the cheapest made cars period. Stay far, far away unless you have to have AWD. Everyone here knows that Mitsubishi doesn't make the highest quality cars but they don't cut as many corners as Subaru does to make their cars light and cheap to manufacture.
