You could just buy a 3rd gen and drop a LSX into her.

Think the only way I'd get an RX7 is a well done LX swap and make it a track car

If you think Mitsubishi engines are unreliable... stay FAR FAR FAR away from rotary engines. I had two RX-8s, one of which was running a custom Garrett 3071R (Devil's Hairdryer) setup and making 320+ rwhp. I've seen 3 rotary motors blow at or on the way to meets, and know of dozens of club member friends who have blown them with pure street driving without ever seeing a track. They are painful to tune, extremely sensitive to detonation, and expensive to rebuild. One of my friends who regularly tracked his turbo RX-8 went through 10 motors before he gave up and switched platforms. The RX-7s in many ways are actually worse. They have a huge rats nest of wires and vacuum hoses in the engine bay, insufficient cooling, and generally don't make it 100k miles bone stock with street driving, let alone putting out the kind of power you are talking about.

The only RX-7 I would even REMOTELY consider owning at this point is an LSx swapped RX-7. They can be reliable, relatively inexpensive (comparatively) and you have a lot of displacement to work with. At that point though, you might want to just go with a damn Corvette instead.

Friends don't let friends buy a rotary. I'm a former Rotard, so I know.

Evo motors are probably on par with the Supra motors or even Honda motors if you don't ask for too much. You hardly ever see 400 and lower Evo's having issues that wern't man made. That being said you should shove a 2J into it. They put those motors in EVERYTHING these days. Its becoming an extremely popular motor choice or 240 guys here and there a few other cars would not expect to have one in them (5 series BMW).

I love RX-7's but I could justify the fact that I know i would have to rebuild it ever 50-100k. Keep the Evo. Keep the Honda. Build a RX-7 when you can afford ot buy one blown up cheap cash (I'm not a fan of car notes). He;; there's continuous rumors the RX-7 will come back soon (ESP. with honda prepping the spirtual successor to the NSX, Some more affordable rear drive 2 door coupes like the Subaru BRZ/Scion and a possible Supra down the road.

An FD would be the perfect car for you if you don't need a dependable driver, never need to drive in snow, don't care about fuel economy, never need to transport more than 1 passenger, ever carry anything bigger than a loaf of bread, or like the feeling of torque.
For a track car they rock.

A friend of mine has a gorgeous FD. I've known him for almost 3 yrs now, and it hasn't run the entire time. His LS1 S13 runs great, though! So does his wifes S13 with the stock KA.

Rotary = unreliable, and difficult to work on.

Before swapping engines into an FD I really find it hard to comprehend why someone wouldnt just buy an 01 or 02 Z06 which will almost certainly be a match for the swapped FD in nearly every way and will be 1000x easier to live with and mod and will be far cheaper.

It seems just a much smarter and easier of a decision and the cars dont even look all that different.

Dont know about that one. You can find FD's with blown motors or with a lot of time on the clock for well under 10K all day long. On top of that you can pick up a full LS1 clip for under 4K now. For some one with a lot of skill and that has the time to find parts i bet some one could build a nice one for under 15K very easy. Its hard to find a C5ZO6 in good condition for less then 20K.

The Rx7 is a fantastic project car if you enjoy tweaking and working on your car. It can be a very fun car, although it will require quite a bit of modification. Stock for stock, imo the Evo is a way better driving experience than the FD, and the FD takes a fair amount of work to be competitive on the track. It's not impossible but it's definitely easier to get an Evo to where it's a solid reliable beast of a sports car whereas the FD will always be a project. Maybe pick up an FC for $1500 and see how you like replacing Apex seals.

There's a special place in my heart for FDs but it would never ever replace my Evo. I also think they're worth like 10k tops. I would never ever drop $20k on one even if it was low miles.
