Ask A Mitsubishi Exec Anything On Jalopnik Right Now
its a shame mitsubishi in america almost failed. I have been enjoying their cars for 20 years now. would like to see the company make a comeback. unfortunately the days of the affordable cool turbo cars are clearly not in their future. and while high performance hybrids are a promising future they are a looong way off from being cool and affordable in anybodies lineup. fortunately for me I like older cars anyway. new cars are becoming waay to technical/electronic/complex for anything other than a scant 10 year life span at best. you only have to look at the evolution of junk yards to see this trend. lifespans of cars is getting shorter and shorter.
I would love for them to continue the evo but Mitsubishi is likely looking into achieving the required 40-50mpg that the government is enforcing to any import and domestic cars in the US. These mpg must be achieved in the next 10-15yrs. that Its clear the evo will be dead or in hibernation for a while.
This is what happens when a disconnected corporate leadership starts making the design decisions rather than the performance and engineering oriented technical teams. This is the start of the end of Mitsubishi.
So lame because as others have clearly pointed out several car companies are making new, sporty and affordable models.

The corporate suits want to build the "one ring to rule them all" -- the one-size-fitz-all car.
Just as Chrysler did with the K-car.
Just before the Feds had to bail them out the first time.
In order to eliminate the risk of failure, ...
... follow the path that's *certain* to fail.

I think they should let us enthusiasts ask them why they are stopping the evo line? all of their moves have been a step ahead yet they did not capitalize. Remember when the GDI technology was developed by mitsu? now everybody has GDI, yet their cars don't have it. dropped their best selling eclipse, did not fill it with 4G63 or 4B11T, etc? all missteps and now they are stopping their halo car? denying us any input?
Mitsubishi auto sales accounts for less than 1% global auto market share. Sports cars make up an even smaller piece of that pie. I am sure they have run the numbers and they just do not think it is worth trying to compete in that market segment.

With that logic, does it mean that they just have to throw the towel and quit the auto industry?
I want more affordable awd sports car as much as anyone, but I cant fault Mitsubishi for bowing out of the game when they are in such poor market position to begin with.

Actually, lots of analysts have long predicted that Mitsubishi would pull out of the US completely. Mitsubishi went through some dark years and now seems committed to staying profitable. Which means returning to their roots with cheap fuel efficient family cars and SUVs. I want more affordable awd sports car as much as anyone, but I cant fault Mitsubishi for bowing out of the game when they are in such poor market position to begin with.
Even the montero or shogun was produced several years before the Land Rover discovery and yet they just dropped it in the US market wasting all the years of the Paris Dakar?

They could have redesigned the montero added some computer nannies and ask consumer reports to do a retest like lexus did with the gx460. The montero would have been a best seller.
Now companies who used to get their asses kicked are even toying with AWD.
Ford of all companies, with their FWD-loving performance guy, are now building an AWD Focus RS.
Yes, the same Ford who said Revoknuckle obsoleted torque steer, and AWD was extra cost and extra weight that wasn't needed. Now they even are building an AWD turbo... recently stating today "Ford is placing a renewed emphasis on performance, as the customers tend to be younger, wealthier and better educated, Nair said."
Apparently their marketing isn't overcoming the fact that youngsters want Evos and STI's..... And they now acknowledged that.
Too expensive "Nope they can afford it".
AWD too much weight "Apparently not when people can afford it".
I've had people saying it was a niche car for years and now that it's going mainstream Mitsubishi is pulling out?!?!?
