Opinions on Audi B5 S4's or M Coupes?
I'm looking to replace my wrecked Evo with either an S4 or an M Coupe, and was curious if anyone on here owned one.
What is your opinion on these two vehicles?
I know one thing for sure, and it will be a downgrade in performance compared to the Evo
But their fine interiors would offset that deficit

well the S4 is an awesome car.......they have that SICK V8 in them now that sounds like the **** with a nice exhaust. It doesn't handle that great in stock form though and is quite heavy but it's more of a luxury car really. Audi seems to be having reliability problems lately too. My uncle has 2 new matching Black S4's (one for him and one for his wife) and so far they haven't had any issues.
One of my old co-workers had a roommate with an M-coupe and I got a short ride in it to a hockey game once. Very tiny car but seemed to handle VERY well and the engine ripped ***!!!!! I'm a sucker for little cars with big power so if I had my choice I'd probably go with the M-Coupe....those little things are bad ***.
edit: sorry, the guy had an M-roadster and not the coupe......basically the same car though except the coupe should be quite a bit stiffer since it's not a convertible.

i've read that the older s4's with the twin turbo had major turbo issues. apparently the k03's need to be replaced at like 60k miles in some cases. it's major work from what i've read. one dude had to play about 6g's to swap them, cuz you have to remove the entire engine from the car to get at them. but that's just what i've read. and the m roadster is nothing like the m coupe. roadster is more like the z3.
I owned a b5 s4 for a year. I'll tell you honestly that I miss the luxo factor immensely. The turbos can have issues, and it's about a 5k job if not under warranty. The problems occur often when the turbos are over boosted by using an aftermarket chip. I recomend buying one if you can find something clean and low miles. If your planning on upgrading the turbos to ko4 than milleage doesn't really matter. If you en up getting one, find me, I've got tons of info on the subject

haaaaaa, funny how some people here on these forums give u their thoughts with out backing it up. first of all I have an S4 twin turbo and they are known to be soooo easy to hook up. Do they have problems, not really. I bought mine used with 36000 miles and i have no problems with the turbos at all. Audi stand behind their warranty and service and they will fix it if it is under warranty no matter what. however, mine is warranted up to 100000 miles so i dont really care. I love the way it drives and if u buy a chip for it it will add 70 whp and about 90 wtq from a chip. you can make an S4 over 500 whp with stock engine internals. They have parts for them all over the place and people look up to you when u drive an S4. now the worst thing in S4 is there is no room in the engine bay that means if a turbo or clutch went bad u almost have to drop the whole engine. its really compact but with K04 setup from APR you should be around 500 hp on stock car. I have it and I love it I will sell my EVO before I sell my S4.

they are built on the same chassis with the same engine......the coupe just has a non-convertible body so it's a bit more stiff. All of the engine and performance goodies plus the underpinnings are the same.
Now it's your turn to back your claims up. Please tell me which chip alone will add 70 whp to the B5 audi S4, remember now, you're talking to an S4 owner, who's been a member of AW for over two years now. There is no chip made that will bring 70 whp to the S4. And Audi generally won't warranty your drivetrain if you have aftermarket parts on your car, ie; a chip. Been there, done that.

the m coupe is a wicked car. Friend of mine that tracks it has one. It's an amazing car in the corners, and real fast, even with the s52 motor. He has fikse wheels and all the suspension goodies
If I had to replace the evo, m coupe would most likely be my first choice.

I've owned both, well all three if you consider the two iterations of the M coupe.
My 99 M coupe (S52, 240hp) was fun, a high 13 second car, lacking in the upper RPM's.
My 2002 M coupe (S54, 315hp) was more fun, a low 13 second car, maybe high 12's. Pulled all the way to redline.
Both cars have decent handling, a bit too much body roll and the spring / shock combo is a bit soft. Turn in is good as are the brakes.
The wifes 01 S4 avant was a decent car. Nice interior, albeit cramped in back. Ours was fairly reliable, outside of the transmission which was replaced at 3k miles.
With a stoptech brake kit the S4 would haul down from speed, but you would never mistake it with all the weight for a good handling car -- more of a somewhat fast luxury cruiser with the worlds worst shifter.
