In those cases all I really want is a sub or pizza bc hey I gotta eat right?

It's just getting harder these days as Im not one to say no typically because I always try to find the good in people and believe that if I can help someone then I'd like to because thats the kid of person I am and don't feel the need to be compensated. The problem is that there are people who try to take advantage of it and that's what annoys me.

I work in an office at a fairly small company ~180 employees. It didn't take long for people to notice that I was into cars when they see the stupid car with the big wing and loud exhaust pull into the parking lot. So when somebody comes up to me that I don't particularly care for and complains that they don't wanna pay a mechanic to do their brakes and they think he's charging too much and ask if I'll "just do it for them?" bc they know Im "into" cars and its probably fun for me. Those are the kind of folks that Im trying to cut off.

I feel like I sound like a grumpy old man right now. I think I should go home and work on my car bc I can, lol
HAHA I can for sure agree with this. I had this exact thing happen and I pretty much just had to flat out say no I only do this for a hobby and have no interest in fixing other cars.

I have 9 vehicles (thank god for collector/antique insurance) so it's true to
say I don't have time for all, except the closest of friends and family. As for
DIY, pretty much do it all.

Just got a used hunter align system last year that works well on my 4 post.
My latest is another MIG with a spool gun for alum. I got a TIG several
years back , but never had time to use it enough to get really good.

One of my more fun projects was completely re-furbing this 1920's lathe.
They truly don't make them like this anymore. Amazing the stuff you can
find in a basement in Brooklyn.......

The tooling alone was worth 10 times the price.

My car has been torn completely down and I put it back together all by myself, including building the engine. The only things I can't do are rebuild transmissions and turbos. I'm sure I could with the right into, I just don't have it and prefer to leave that stuff to professionals, because all hell breaks loose if i get lazy and miss something (which I'm known to do LOL). Oh, and I haven't rebuilt shocks. I wouldn't do that either. I made my own splitter, my own "gauge pod", my own wideband mount, gurney flap, sway bar end links, and a ton of other stuff. My car is definitely "mine". no doubt. I take pride in the fact that it works so well.
Oh, and i can't weld. MAN, I wish I could (would have a rollbar by now).

I'm pretty handy, been collecting tools for almost 20 yrs now for DIY tasks.

My question is what do you guys do about borrowing tools?

Usually with good friends, never an issue.
However I had a really bad experience where a so called friend didn't return a tool which they swore they did. After months and me flipping out on them they finally replaced it.
Now out of respect my best friends started to use a white board sign out sheet... but now in general I almost never let anyone use my tools anymore.
Curious other's experience.

I just don't. If your a good enough friend ill come over with my tools and hang out with you while you do your thing, then the tools come home with me. When i was younger i lent out some tools which my friend left in the back of her car, which was then broken into and the tools stolen. She was pretty down on her luck so i just let it go, but learned the lesson. There have been other occurrences that have reinforced my current policy of never lending tools.

Years ago I loaned tools and when they weren't returned and I went seeking them the reaction I got was surprise. I encountered people who's borrowing was a one way deal and they absolutely had no concept of returning borrowed items. So, like Biggiesacks, I either carried my tools to the job or invited people to my shop and we used only my tools. No lending.

I don't borrow or loan tools. It's too easy for someone to forget when they get done with them. Plus, some of mine are specialty/hard to find/expensive (I.E. timing belt tools).
Harbor Freight is so cheap... no real reason to borrow any more.
Oh.. I will borrow the occasional tool from AutoZone. If it works, I go to HF and get my own LOL

Easy, never............. I would rather help a friend do a job on their vehicle, in my shop, with my stuff, than loan them anything............

I don't lend out tools. I hate tracking them down or seeing them come back all busted to ****. Drives me nuts. I also dislike people who ask for help but expect me to do the heavy work. These are usually the lazy or cheap asses who can't afford a proper mechanic to do the work. I'm all for giving guidance and lending my support but I'll be damned to wrench on someone's car for free while they stand there looking on without a clue.

didn't read the thread... but... I wish I had enough money not to be a DIYer...

although sometimes I wanna install something just to get the experience, like when I installed my BBK. although it was a bit of a let down after installing it, basically a couple step beyond changing pads and brake lines, haha

I have the tools and a little bit knowledge but no space to work on. So either I just bring my car to friends that has a garage who can also help me, or worst part just pay someone to do it.

I almost got kicked out of an apartment for working in the stall. So then I took it out front. Public street LOL. I popped my EZ Up and went to town.
