a good friend of mine has the gti and has put so much money in it and is only getting around 200 to the wheels and is not even in the 13s. the cars cost a lot to begin with too and are not very fast stock. when my lancer was stock i could hang with it and now that i have a turbo i destroy them.

My friend had a 1.8t jetta and got it into the 13s with a chip, exhaust, intake and a bov. somethin like 1.5gs... id say thats decent, although it did cost 20gs to buy in the first place.

check the vortex forums as said above.....that 1.8T is a great little engine and takes to mods very easy to make great power. Not the cheapest car in the world to mod but makes nice power and LOTS of torque. My buddy has a 2000 GTI and with a few hundred bucks worth of mods he dyno'd at 195hp and 220 ft.lbs of torque. But they routinely get that engine to 300hp reliably....but it's costly. German cars are all expensive to mod....goes with the territory.

Mate, these engines are s**t. they are as lagy as hell with any reasonable turbo on (you need 6 speed close ratio box to keep them in the power band) and they produce poor torque. the 5 valve thing is just a selling point and has no real benefit especially when there is a turbo on there. I think the BEST i have seen from one of these, on race fuel, was 400 bhp!!!!!

they do have a considerable mount of lag and do need to upgrade to a larger turbo. 300hp seems to be the peak point for most of the 1.8ts that i know and they put so much money into getting there and it isnt worth it imo.

iono. Bf's (who will only tell you what he has in his car after the race) GTi pulls mid 12's. Only about a grand invested in it I believe.

The sucker pulls, I tell ya.

But he has his qualms about the engine. I'll ask him about it tonight. I think it has something to do with the wheels not being able to handle the torque. *taps foot* Man, I'm not in the mood to try and remember these things...

germans build theyre cars to last.....

the engine is very well made...and will hold gobs and gobs of power...on the stock block....

theyre expensive..and a pain...but youre not gonna have to worry about the motor for a long time...

and the 1.8t comes in the GTi,jetta,passat,a4 and TT models....that i know of

maybe u were running against a 2.0 or maybe hes a sh*tty driver

i have both cars and i can tell u that theres a difference in power maybe because my lancer is a auto...

but it does not cost alot to have it around 200 whp all u need is a chip, cai, & exhaust...

Car and Driver did an interesting tuner car challenge in which they compared VW's, Acura's and others. What was interesting was that despite thousands of dollars and huge claimed horsepower numbers, most of the cars performed only slightly better than stocks. If I recall correctly, heavily modified VW's with 265 horsepower did the quarter mile in a pretty pathetic 15.3. All for $36,000. Unless you've got NOS, alot of those tuner cars are a lot of noise and little else.
