JDM Evolution Imports is importing or getting ready to import S15 Spec-Rs and Ss into the US I believe, but their website doesn't have much information. $41k on the Spec R is a little much in my opinion though, that's M3 terrority.

Motorex was going to import S15s, I don't see any listed on their site, so I'm not sure if they've finished the legalization process.

Also, remember that it's easy to get a car here, but difficult to keep it here. A bunch of people had Euro-spec Elises here and lost them (without compensation) when the feds found out about the cars. It's also possible that this young man had the car here on temporary permit, which I think is "common" among foreign dignataries and whatnot.

I would contact motorex and see if they can help you or direct you to someone who can. Motorex is the most reputable of the grey market importers I have found.

Motorex is a rip off. They make claims to being the only importer of Skylines, but its totally not true. They make it more convienent (because you dont have to locate a car in Japan by yourself and find a shipper) but they WAY over charge. If you look around you will find other car importers that can do the same thing for you without the massive cost of Motorex.

I have a question on this subject. Emissions and crash worthiness are two parameters for importation of a non-federal car. Motorex did crash testing for the Skyline right? Now that the Skyline has been crash tested why can't anyone go through the emissions federalization process with any grey market broker for 6k and have a Skyline?

Yahoo Auctions has them for under 10K usd, many have already over 600hp. They're a dime-a-dozen over there. What I'm suggesting is that Motorex is certainly not the sole importer but their testing should set a global, documented precident for importing those models right?

That is correct. Once the crash-testing is dont for a car, it is done and you dont have to do it again.

You can use any importer as long as you do the emissions work for it.

The EPA requires you to use one of their contracted companies for certification on imported vehicles. That is one way Motorex has you by the *****.

There are dozens of those firms though. It costs 6K for federalization of exhaust/emissions.

No argument there. They want $75-98,000 for an R34 depending on version and mileage; and the S15 was supposedly going to be in the $30-40k realm.

The flipside is that with Motorex, you're paying for a 'guarantee' that you'll get a US legal car. Look at the whole Evolution Imports fiasco. For some people the price is worth it.

What does this have to do with Evo's? If you create a thread that is not about the Evo, it does not belong in the Evo General forum. :|

SC~ who is moving this off to 'other cars'

Well, you do need to be a licensed importer/exporter of motor vehicles im sure, and then the legalization procedure is pricey, but my question is, what are the chances of getting in trouble for it if you live in a state other then cali that doesnt do smog checking and the vehicle restrictions are well, less strict?

You wouldn't be able to register the vehicle without vin swapping, which is a federal offense. =/
