hey guys

my dad wanted me to post this because his bmw 530i has about 12000 miles on it and he hasnt changed the oil on it....only beacuse his bmw dealership keeps telling him not to...saying that its too early because bmw has some special oil or something

does anyone have any input on this?

thanks

Yea, I've heard things like that. Not just about BMW's. I think with Porche's you are only supposed to change the oil once every 15,000 or some crap like that.

But hey, the car is under warranty, and the dealer is telling him not to change it, so I wouldn't worry about it either way.

alright

yea...the only reason he didnt go out and change it himself is because of the 50,000 mile maintenance warranty he has on the car so hes just gonna listen to them unless someone here knows bmw is just taking us for a ride

I know on my mother's Jaguar that her first oil change wasn't until either 5 or 10,000, but then after that she doesn't need to get one for a long time.... Tell him not to worry about it and just listen to the dealership. Plus just as Regulator said, it is under warranty.

Yeah my parents both have had BMWs, the first couple services don't require frequent oil changes. The engine are built that well....once the car becomes alittle older i believe you get on a more regular scedule. Just make sure the oil level in the car is up to where it should be and everything will be just fine.

He should only wait if he doesn't want to pay for an oil change. The intervals for the free scheduled maintenance are quite long.

However, I'd change the oil every 5K, regardless of the fact it's synthetic. IMHO, if I had the money for a well-equipped 530i (nowadays seeming to be about $50K. Eesh...) I have the money for more frequent oil changes.
