The new Direct Shift Gearbox DSG
I read a detailed article on The Direct Shift Gearbox - DSG > the new Volkswagen - Audi transmision < with great pictures http://mydreams.go.ro/art_direct_shift.html
Is it any good? Does anybody know?
I can`t wait to test it...
I've seen them do a detailed review of this on TV (Motortrend I think) and they drove the car and then did some technical stuff to show and demo how it works. They were really impressed and said the shifting was instant with no loss of power whatsoever. It's the first system that will ACTUALLY be like F1. I can't wait. I've tried those tiptronic tranny's before and they suck ***.....it's still like an automatic when it shifts.
What about double clutching ?
Audiworld article on DSG
They had a lot more information, but their site search makes it difficult to find. Could be on VWVortex instead.

I've driven a TT with the DSG, and it is fantastic. It really is a sweet piece. I've driven a friends E46 M3 with SMG, and as nice as it is, its a bit rough. Even in the smoothest shifting mode, its a bit jerky when just cruising around. Driven fast, its great, but that happens very little compared to the time you spend driving around town. The DSG is nothing like that. It shifts so quick and smooth it doesn't even feel like anything happened. The shifts happen so fast, there is almost no momentum change, just a change in engine note. And, just like with the SMG, it will blip the throttle on downshifts. In automode, you can't even hardly tell the shifts happen. Very nice piece. I love the semi-auto boxes like these. Not the crappy auto-stick things that are just auto boxes that you tell when to shift. These boxes are true manual-style boxes with clutches that are just computer controlled. Very good, high tech stuff.
