I dont know if this has been asnwered b4, but why do all of Mitsu's cars, except the evo, have a SOHC?

honestly, it costs more to have DOHC, when SOHC can do the same thing for cheaper...

Probably the same reason that until very recently, Mercedes-Benz engines have had 3 valves per cylinder. Reduced complexity, fewer parts, resulting in less cost.

Additionally, with the exception of the Evolution, none of Mitsubishi's model line is geared towards performance. Even the Eclipse is merely "sporty" (I would know!). A cheaper to build engine gets passed onto the customer, which means they can attempt to win more sales on price.

Actually, the main reason that MB did that was to lower emissions. The figured out that by making 2 intake and 1 big exhaust valve, it sped up the heating of the catalytic converter, thus lower the ammount of cold start junk out the pipe. But, in the process, yes it did lower the ammount of parts in the head. Having 1 cam is just much simpler to operate, so lower costs are the usual main benefit.
