need a little help with 92 explorer. shifter knob keeps falling off
i just got me a 92 ford explorer. its a 5 speed and im tryin to learn to drive it, after im moving it pretty easy, but just getitn the car goin is a little tough especially on a slight hill. anyways the explorer shift knobs are the kind that glue on i think, cause my friend drove the car to a place where i can practice and the knob came off. he said most knobs are screw on knobs. so im wondering, how the hell do i fix it? i mean i can glue it on but that seems kinda dangerous, i dont want it fallin off on my when im going fast and gotta downshift and slowdown. suggestions?
make up some epoxy and put it on their should stay fine if u want to get an aftermarket knob this would be the time to do it some aftermakrets are held on by screws ( not screw on ) any way hope this helped.
well b4 you buy it make sure one of a few things
a: eather it has screws that will clamp onto your shifter, or
b: if it screws onto the shifter its large enough to fit over the top so you can glue / expoxy it into place.
c: if it is a screw on type and not big enough have time and patients and equipment / ( metal shop / maby wood shop ) to drill a bigger hole in it being carefull not to scratch the visible part. and u want something like this ,
mix it up on a peice of card board and u only need enough to put on the knob so when it hardens it makes a solid connection. dont fill the hole on the knob too much because when u put it onto the shifter it will push out and all over every thing and dont put to little because it wont hold. if u want to be on the safe side put a little plastic bag over the shifter colum poke a hole in it so that the shifter goes thru the bag and that the bag would act like a drop cloth for extra epoxy let it setup a bit and take the bag off b4 it becomes totaly harend. you can use ur mixing cardboard to determin this. sorry if this isnt maken sence its early and i havent slept o ya heres the link to epoxy
ok thats not working so goto
www.homedepot.com top right corner it says search type in "super glue" only comes up with 5 choices you want the one that is epoxy in a syringe
give me a shout if you need any thing else

ok cool thanks. this doesnt really have to do with the knob but i have 2 questions. first one, do you or anyone else have any tips for a new driver of manual transmission, on how to start on a hill? there is a hill by my house with a stop sign half way up it and when i stop at it, i usually stall. takes me a few good tries to finally get passed it. anyways some people say to use your ebrake and let it go when you feel the clutch engage, but i cant do that really since on the explorer, the brake is a pedal one where i would have to pull the lever to release it. any suggestions? second question, why do people say when your racing, "did you downshift into (insert gear)?" i mean, i thought you want to shift up to go faster. is there some kind of trick to this or something?
lots and lots of practice to ur questions about stoping on a hill and going again.. no real tricks to it just make comeing off the clutch and on the gas as smooth as possable . dont be a fraid to roll back wards a little just not enough to hit somone behind you. hope that helps you might want to find somone that has a manuel car explorers normaly have a pritty far throw between gears barrow somones car some people find it more simple to shift shorter to get the shifting and stoping and starting down and adjust to the longer throw. and if ur raceing in a explorer u got som issues
umm but ya.. really depends on where ur red line is and what the gear below it has most of the time when u are just driveing and somone starts pulling up on you you can down shift and get a little extra power. as i said earlyr depends on the car and practice . lots and lots of practice. and dont be raceing. not smart thats what a track is for.
